Elite players drive outcomes, losing one is a big deal. It's not like the other guys can just try harder. They were already trying as hard as they could.

I don't know how anyone could have expected our D to be anything but bad this year (except through wild optimism).
And we had an entire draft and off season to do something about it; but obviously didn't. So why keep beating a dead horse?? Management hasn't actually done anything about it since..so why keep crying about it?

I don't think I've ever seen anyone say he's more than just a guy. A decent starter, especially when playing beside an elite playmaker like Shazier.
I don't keep tabs on every thread. But someone was talking about how many tackles he had last year and blah, blah, blah. And a couple of people co-signing behind him. VW is "just a guy" and that's all he was. Before and after Shazier.

Good article that showcases our garbage coaching. What a mess. I can't remember seeing anything like this. The confusion, lack of preparation is flat out astounding. I'm not saying our defense is super talented but this article isn't about talent or lack thereof. This is poor defensive game planning, coaching and lack of preparation. It doesn't matter if these guys are pros or high school players. They don't even know who is supposed to be on the field, the play call, where to line up, or other basic responsibilities. Like I said, a midget football team could do this correctly if they are well coached.

But what impact starter could they have drafted at 1:28?

I was for not tagging Bell and using the money to try to replace Shazier, despite understanding why Bell was pissed about being tagged a second time. But once they decided that they wanted to at least try to keep Bell, they didn't have any money to bring in an impact starter on D. In retrospect letting him walk without tagging him would probably have been a better call, but it wasn't unreasonable to try. The apparent implosion of the team this year means it's nice to have one less player on a long term deal.

Given that they tagged Bell, I think they did a decent job bringing in guys with the potential to be average (at below average prices). But, to do that they had to gamble on the health of two guys with injury histories.

There isn't a fairy godmother to fix all the problems on the D with the flick of a magic wand. The D wasn't that good when Shazier was playing. So, it's clear that it's going to get much worse without him.
