Didn't he come in and say he wanted to do a 43 to begin with but wouldn't change anything the legend LeBeau was doing or something like that... I wouldn't necessarily agree that it's his baby...

So you think the present defensive system is something that has been completely imposed on Tomlin against his will? He's had plenty of time since LeBeau left to make any kind of transition he wanted to make.

yeah, it was obvious when DL was here Tomlin wasn't going to change his scheme.

But what about the last few years? Butler was Tomlin's guy, put in to run what Tomlin wanted. Don't see how you can spin what's happened so as to absolve MT of responsibility for the D.

MT is responsible for both sides of the ball and I don't think Butler is Tomlin's guy. I think it was the 'best decision" at the time so players wouldn't have to learn a whole new defense. As we see, it's not working so I would prefer we move on from Butler.

I'm still holding out hope that Butler gets fired or demoted.

These days, 3-4 and 4-3 don't mean a whole lot...Tomlin wanted a defense that could be multiple...compared to what was done before, the defense a multiple front defense...there were new blitzes, new defensive formations, etc....

But, think about this: What would the offense, on a regular basis, look like without Ben. Now, imagine that Landry was also injured and so the Steelers had to sign a street free agent and start him less than a week after joining the team...

That is like losing Shazier.

When you lose that type of player and you are already three quarters of the way through the season, and the only replacement available was on his couch for the two months prior, there is not much that can be done within that period to cover up that weakness and stop other teams from exploiting it...

When the Pats** lost Hightower, they found a way to adjust...but it took them more than a month...

Butler worked with Tomlin years before he came to the Steelers. MT brought him in as an defensive coach. When LeBeau left, Tomlin had a choice to hire whoever he wanted as DC. Do you think AR told him, "You have to go with Butler"?

No doubt, the loss of Shazier was a massive blow, and hard for the defense to overcome at that point in the season.

But the loss of Shazier doesn't account for all of the defensive woes from that point forward. In the divisional game, the Steelers were clearly unprepared for what the Jax offense did. Through the game, the Steelers' D fell short in responding, not only from a players' aspect, but in coaching, too. I didn't expect the Steelers to beat the Patriots, if they faced them in the AFCC, and I didn't expect them to beat whomever the NFC sent to the Super Bowl, because of the weakness at ILB. I didn't even have a strong expectation that they would beat Jacksonville. But I never could have had any inkling that they would give up 38 points to a Bortles-led Jaguars offense that had managed merely 10 points a game the previous two weeks against the Titans and the Bills.

Just felt like our D was based on hoping someone would make a play. I can’t lie. I said I wanted to see 8 in the box and make Bortles beat us but I didn’t expect the play action to ha e that many players wide open in the flat. It was obvious we weren’t prepared or maybe we were prepared but not for Bortles to make those throws.

Just looking back and reflecting on the season it’s obvious our coaches aren’t reaching our players on D or they aren’t that good.

I felt the same way. After watching this go down, I had a terrible feeling the SB run was over... if not against the JAGS, then the following week.

doesn't have to be a genius just someone who is as good or better than Tomlin.

I am not a Tomlin hater, but my frustrations with him continue to grow. I personally don't think it would be all that difficult to find someone at least AS good as him. Shouldn't have to look for long to find someone able to keep the team unprepared, unfocused and under performing.

I'd have no problem kicking the tires on a candidate new to the head coaching ranks. Vrable. Kris Richardson from Seattle. I'd also dig through the college ranks to see if there is any interest from the likes of Chris Peterson or David Shaw. I just feel a change is needed or the same problems that have plagued the Steelers for the last several years will only continue.
