It’s ok to evaluate a players individual performance - but you simply cannot overlook the overall result of the entire units performance. As the numbers above say, top 5 defense. Record for sacks etc. this is significant. Remember also how others have fared this year. Artie burns has been slammed on this board. Don’t get me started on the Mitchell is an idiot thread. Moats is a journeyman, gay is too old, sensebaugh cant cover, Sean Davis got destroyed by gronk - and on and on.

Yet were a top 5 defense. How can that be with 11 scrubs on the field?

Perhaps, the coaches know what they’re doing?

I hear ya but lets be truthful, the schedule we faced was very kind to us in the quality of QB's we faced. So I"m not going to get too excited. We faced one for real QB other then Brady the entire season in Matthew Stafford and he threw for damn near 500 yards on us.

But the ultimate bottom line is that in 3 weeks, if an obviously declining Brady bombs us again in Foxboro, all is for naught. So lets just hold off on the chest beating right now.

Who is beating their chests? The people celebrating 2 garbage time sacks?

and if we beat the Pats or don’t even play them and get to the big dance folks will still use the Detroit game we won as proof we are doing it wrong.

I would love to shut out teams every week and hold QB’s under 100 yards but sometimes our coaches use the bend don’t break model or makes sacrifices in the game plan.

Did Staffird beat us? No. Did Brady throw for a gazzillion yards? No.

It’s like no matter what our record is or how many sacks we have folks will always say “until we beat (insert name) it doesn’t matter”

well that isn’t true. When we break our record for sacks and go 13-3 and when most folks admit we should be 14-2 and have HFA if not for sh!tty NYC politics I think it matters.

I think the the reason JH isn’t here anymore is because we can do those things without him on the field.

maybe some folks need to admit they got it wrong. Hell, I will admit I got the Watt prediction wrong. Just feels like some folks refuse to accept that we won a different way than they expected and instead of giving credit they double down on something negative. This whole “win the SB or I get to point out how I was right” is laughable. It’s extremely hard to win a SB. Betting on the field is easy to do.

This thread started because someone said JH had a good game as a Pat.
He had 5 tackles and 2 sacks and forced a fumble.

The response was dismissive because the sacks came during "garbage time".

To which some of us responded by reminding people that Dupree had literally zero in all statistical categories.

I understand fully why Dupree and TJ are the starters. Better in coverage,

Nevertheless, old man James remains a superior player in certain key abilities than any current Steeler. The Pats game showed dude can still ball at a very high level. You want to talk garbage time? Dupree did goose eggs an entire game.

                  You guys keep talking "record".

We went 9 straight in games WITH the old man starting all of one year ago. Do you really believe using JH as a situational player would make us worse? I contend it is very likely we win the Bears game had we used JH over Chickillo. We barely lost as it was, and nobody has ever abused us on JHs side like Chickillo was. That alone would make us top seed.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

                    Nine straight games LAST YEAR.

Somehow, the Steelers win 13 games THIS YEAR with Harrison playing 40 snaps.

Would it have hurt to put Harrison in the game? Perhaps or perhaps not. If he had gotten more snaps, perhaps we win the Chicago game. But, perhaps we lose a different game if he plays more...

Again, it is the Steelers’ and Tomlin’s job to manage an entire team over the course of a season, not to make sure that one player is seeing enough action to be happy. Over the course of the season, the defense has been more than good.

                      we weren't undefeated with JH.

Maybe we win the Bears game, maybe not.

no one cares about garbage stats. I remember when you tried to use them for Tyrod Taylor vs us last year because he finished with decent stats but it was all in garbage time.

That's whats crazy about all this. We win more games than last year and we are the #2 seed and lets be honest, we probably should have been the #1 seed if not for a crazy overturned TD and somehow we are doing it wrong?

and I like JH but anyone getting a sack or 2 with 1:38 left in a game that's a blowout isn't cause for celebration.

I read a lot of boards. I've noticed that some of the same people minimizing Harrison's sacks vs. the Jets are crowing about the Steelers setting a team sack record this year. Sort of ironic, don't you think? I mean, by Dupree's admission, Steelers' defenders were freelancing in a meaningless game against the worst team in the league in order to try to break the sack mark!

I watched the Jets game. Harrison played well. He ran well, and showed that he still has the good football instincts. Maybe he can't cover as well as Bud Dupree, but it's apparent that he can do everything else better. Utilized situationally, he can still be a tremendously effective player.

If the Steelers should happen to face the Patriots in the playoffs, I think Villaneuva will have his hands full. I'm not confident that the Steelers get the best of that matchup.

Keep in mind that there is a huge spectrum between Harrison is done and Harrison is still great.

Sure, he still has positive attributes but there are many negative ones as well. The number one duty of a backup linebacker is special teams. He cannot do it. Pass coverage. Not really. And the big one that makes me scratch my head as to why he keeps getting defended, his actions in the locker room when he became disgruntled. Everyone becomes unhappy with their boss's decisions at some point and we would all expect to be fired if we handled it the way James did. A backup OLB is not worth that headache in a playoff stretch run.

OLB was taking an extra spot on the roster (5 for 2 spots). Coupled with the above, it made perfect sense.
