OT: Browns fire GM Sashi Brown but announce Hue Jackson will return as coach in 2018

    Browns fire Sashi Brown

Posted by Michael David Smith on December 7, 2017, 10:32 AM EST

The Sashi Brown era in Cleveland is over.

Brown, who ran Cleveland’s personnel department the last two years, was fired this morning, according to ESPN.

The timing of the move comes as a surprise, but a front office shakeup was to be expected. The Browns have been the worst team in the NFL each of the last two seasons, and Brown decided to trade down rather than draft franchise quarterbacks Carson Wentz and Deshaun Watson. Moves like that are guaranteed to cost a G.M. his job.

Now the question is where Browns owner Jimmy Haslam goes from here. The one thing Brown did well was acquire a lot of future draft picks, including two first-round picks and three second-round picks in 2018. So a good G.M. candidate may be eager to jump in and take over the Browns, thinking he can quickly turn things around with all that draft capital.

On the other hand, the Browns have been such a mess for so long that some G.M. candidates may not be interested in working in Cleveland. After so many mistakes, Haslam has to make the right decision this time.

Jimmy Haslam: Hue Jackson will be the Browns’ head coach in 2018

Posted by Michael David Smith on December 7, 2017, 10:56 AM EST

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam said after firing G.M. Sashi Brown this morning that he will not also fire head coach Hue Jackson.

In a statement released by the team, Haslam said he is committed to Jackson for another season.

“We have great appreciation and gratitude for Sashi’s commitment and leadership to our organization but believe transitioning to someone with strong experience and success in drafting and building consistently winning football teams is critical to the future of the Cleveland Browns,” Haslam said. “Today we informed Sashi that we were going in a new direction. The 2018 draft and offseason is pivotal for our franchise, we need to ensure that we maximize our opportunity for success; with our picks, free agency and building our roster. Hue Jackson will remain our coach and will return for the 2018 season but we feel it is necessary to take significant steps to strengthen our personnel department. We have begun the process of having productive conversations regarding leadership of our football operations and will provide further updates when appropriate. We thank Sashi for all his hard work and dedication to the Cleveland Browns.”

Of course, if Haslam changes his mind about that — or if the next G.M. of the Browns changes his mind — it wouldn’t be the first time that a coach who got a vote of confidence from the owner ended up losing his job. But for now, Haslam says Jackson is his guy for another season.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

What?!? The Browns want to hire a GM with actual football experience instead of a lawyer/contract negotiator?!? Someone with ultimate say over their roster who can actually evaluate prospective players?!?

    What a novel idea...
Actually, my post was NOT about you...but, if the shoe fits, feel free to lace that &!+€# up and wear it.

I know there are times when you trade down but I always feel like the majority of the time it's said because it sounds cool. Why the hell you trading down when you need a franchise QB? For more picks? Yeah.. it's one thing if you are great at finding needles in the haystack but if not, just get the best player like a normal freaking football franchise instead of trying to be cute about it.

How many times has this team passed over obvious upgrades at QB to get some bum late in the first round?

Why draft a true franchise QB with the early first round pick you have every year when you can unearth gems down in the 20's like Johnny Manziel, Brandon Weeden, or Brady Quinn (or wait until round 2 to get a Deshone Kizer).

Screw that. They may actually become competitive with all their draft picks. We don't want that to happen

Keep screwing up and making bad decision Jimmy

whats funny is most experts always say the Browns had a good draft right after those picks.

It's like they are scared to ask the prettiest girl to the prom even though she is available and said she will go with you.

unless you have a glaring hole - trading down is usually a good move. The true value in the draft is the second and third rounds in my opinion. That being said, they have had a HUGE hole in QB since forever. Take the QB you need. Shore up the O line, get a solid back and you can get 6-7 wins next year. Groom your QB and see what the future brings.

But this is the browns. They’ll draft kellen Winslow the third instead of a qb.....

Is that not the TRUTH - I never had such a hearty chuckle, SMH moment, like only you can get from the Browns during the draft when they traded their #12 pick to Houston and they used it to get Deshaun Watson. I was saying to myself during the entire process "I hope the Browns don't draft Watson" And guess what??? Then they really tried to be cute by taking Jabrill Peppers because the knew the Steelers was "hot" on his trail - The end result, we got TJ Watt instead!

Soooooo glad this chump is no longer a minority shareholder in the Steelers. He obviously learned literally nothing from the Rooneys.

Trading down can be a good idea if you don't need a quarterback because to be competitive for playoffs and super bowls you have to have a franchise quarterback. I know dilfer won one and some guy named Johnson at Tampa, but by and large if you don't have a Roethlisberger, Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Manning(s), etc at quarterback you aren't competing. The best way to get quarterback is in the top 5 of the draft. Picking up more picks by trading down can be benficial for all other positions unless, of course, that once in a lifetime player is there for the taking. But, quarterback isn't something to trade down and pick up the 3rd or 4th best rated QB in the draft if you can grab the highest rated QB. It doesn't always work out but you have a better chance of getting Ben at #11 than you do Brady at #180 or whatever it was.

I went to UT my freshman year and still root for them. When I heard he was the reason Tennessee football was in the dumps it all made sense.

Trading down works when you have great scouts and know how to spot talent. However, when you stink.... just grab a damn QB in the top of the draft. It’s like they are scared to screw it up so they pick everything but a QB.
