Hue Jackson supports players celebrating big plays, even when Browns get blown out

Posted by Michael David Smith on October 19, 2017, 1:43 PM EDT

With the Browns trailing the Texans 24-3 on Sunday, Cleveland defensive tackle Danny Shelton tackled Houston running back Lamar Miller for a loss of three yards. Shelton got up and celebrated boisterously.

Some observers weren’t keen on that, thinking that while the winless Browns were getting blown out, it wasn’t the right time for a player to celebrate. But Browns coach Hue Jackson said today that he was fine with Shelton’s actions.

Asked about Shelton’s dancing by reporters today, Jackson defended it, saying he wants his players to play with emotion. If anything, Jackson said, he’d like to see more celebrating on the field.

Of course, Jackson would like to see his players also have more reasons to celebrate. Given that they’re 0-6 last year and a combined 1-21 in Jackson’s two seasons as the Browns’ head coach, reasons for celebration have been few and far between. On the occasional play when a Brown has done something worth celebrating, Jackson tells them to go right ahead.

When Mitchell's contract expires after next season, he's likely go to one of the Ohio teams next, and not only because he is an alumnus of Ohio University. It's either to the Cleveland Clowns, where celebrations while in the middle of being blown out are encouraged, or to join kindred spirits Burfict and Pac Man in Cincinnati, where cheap shots intended solely to injure opponents are encouraged.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

I think Hue Jackson would like to see more celebrations because it would mean they were making plays.

I'm sure he would welcome more TD celebration penalties as well.

its mostly just people saying it was a cheap shot, seems like his fans are the ones taking it personally

it might help if you guys took off the black and gold glasses once in awhile. if you flip the table and somebody hit ben like that, most here would be screaming for a suspension

dirty hit, fine is deserved. get over it

You can claim Chickillo pushed him because it appears he did put his hand on Mitchell... It is like having a bad knee, then legitimately slipping at work (but not hurting your knee), but still filing the claim for your knee because of appearances. It is even more bush-league, to pretend you didn't do something that your history (and the tape) says you would do.
I wasn't hired for my disposition.

Depot has a article with all-22 film showing chick stepped on his foot. Not only the push.
not a big fan of a average safety who needs upgraded on this defense. But he should not be fined for that. Does he go for big hits. Yep but nothing wrong with most of them. But that big hit with a legal hit causes him to miss to many tackles. He should maybe be fined for not sacking smith there! That the only bad thing I see there.

                          haha.. that's a good one.

doesn't matter if he was pushed or had his foot stepped on.. someone on this team has to be the punching bag every year.

I place 0% of the blame for any of our early season struggles on Mitchell. Our losses this season rest squarely on the shoulders of our horrible play calling and carefree ball security issues. Our defense, and in particular our secondary, has been a surprising strong suit for us this year. So kudos in that regard.

I just don't enjoy cheering for guys who take cheap shots at opponents or guys who get up and trash talk after giving up a big play while losing a game at home. Mitchell is both of those guys. He's basically the opposite of someone like James Farrior or Heath Miller.

You can hit hard without intent to injure, and you can trash talk opponents at the proper time (he should ask Coach Porter about this; Peezy was a similar type of emotional player and was beloved in Pittsburgh, but Mitchell's antics have crossed over that fine line in my mind...I expect to see that type of B.S. from Burfict or Pac Man...it simply doesn't belong in black and gold).

Looking at Mitchell's hit I thought it was a case of "accidentally" on purpose. He was lightly pushed but made no effort to hold back and in fact added to the acceleration. Or in the case of the "accidental" shooting. "Officer, the gun just went off. I didn't pull the trigger. I have no clue why it just went off."
