depending on who they keep i would prefer coates to dhb, but i guess he offered 0 in trade value where coates at least offered you something

I don't think that the team preferred Coates but decided that getting back their own 6th and giving up a 7th made them decide to trade away the guy they wanted to keep. They traded Coates and Cockrell so that they at least got something for 2 guys who they were about to cut anyway.

I disagree, I don't think Coates or Cockrell get cut if their not traded. I think they where traded because they were the only guys who could be traded, you either trade them for a draft pick or cut another guy for nothing. If Coates doesnt get traded I think DHB is cut and if Cockrell isn't traded I think they cut gay.

I thought Coates would make it but a part of me feels like he thought his job was safe. I didn't see anything that suggested he was fighting for a roster spot. I still think he has potential but we don't have the time to hold his hand...

and bow now I doubt he reaches his potential in Cleveland but I hope he continues to play lazy against us.

And I sir respectfully disagree. Remember, the Steelers didn't trade Coates for a 6th round pick, they included a 7th rounder in the mix. Much like the McDonald deal where they gave up a (hopefully) late fourth, they received a (hopefully early) fifth. Once you factor that in, the draft pick exchange is just about sliding up or down some spots late. I don't see the team giving up a player that they'd prefer do move up about 25 spots from the 7th to 6th. Not a team who is competing for a Super Bowl. They keep the players they want.
