Bryant wants man to man talk with Ben

HENDERSON, Nev. -- When the Pittsburgh Steelers (http://www.espn.com/nfl/team/_/name/pit/pittsburgh-steelers) report to training camp in a couple of weeks, Martavis Bryant (http://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/16886/martavis-bryant) would like to have a talk with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (http://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/5536/ben-roethlisberger).
"I feel like we need to," Bryant told ESPN on Thursday during a break from his offseason workouts in the 109-degree Nevada desert heat. "We should have a man-to-man. Because some of the things he put out there about me, I kind of didn't agree with how he did it. So I want to sit down and hear his own opinion, man-to-man, about why he did that."
Bryant is the mercurial, high-ceiling Steelers wide receiver who was suspended four games in 2015 and the entire 2016 season for violations of the league's substance abuse policy. When Bryant got suspended last year, Roethlisberger was highly critical of him, telling the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Bryant had lied to him and that the team felt "let down" by the talented wideout.

"At that time, I was going through a lot of stuff. I wasn't really even worried about his opinion at that time, because there was just a lot that was going on," Bryant said Thursday. "He's my brother. I love him. But at the same time, I have my own family outside of football. I have my own problems. I'm not just going to come up to you and open up to you about what's going on with my personal life. That's not how I am. We just didn't see eye-to-eye on that, but as far as right now, everything's great."
Bryant was conditionally reinstated by the league in April, says he has been clean for more than a year and expects no further hiccups on his planned return to the NFL for 2017. He says he's training harder than he ever did before in the offseason. But he does think there are some things that he and his quarterback need to say to each other before the season starts.
"We haven't had that sit-down talk yet," Bryant said. "Hopefully we'll have it before the season starts. If not, that's fine. I'm still going to go out and perform and do what I have to do to be the best teammate I can be."
Roethlisberger said earlier this summer that Bryant had to "win back everybody's trust," and that he hoped Bryant would come talk to him. Bryant was asked how he expected that talk to go.
"It doesn't really matter," Bryant said. "Man-to-man talk. You put it out there, man-to-man, explain to me what you mean."

Bryant, I think it's pretty clear what Ben meant. To be honest with you, Bryant bringing this up shows me a few things. First, a sober person who has truly looked in a mirror would own 100% of what Ben said. He would be looking to make an amend to Ben and the entire team. He wouldn't be looking to show his own hypocrisy by calling Ben out in the media.
      Trolls are people too.

Ben called him out in the media and he did the same. I never think it's a good idea to play into the media's hand like this but it's typical Pittsburgh media drama. I wouldn't be surprised if both players said their words were taken out of context.

Bryant is still hurt by being kicked when he was down. Ben was probably hurt because Bryant is a lethal weapon and told him he would stay out of trouble.

Who wants to hear about these things from the press vs just picking up the phone and calling the person directly?

Does Pittsburgh have spotty cellphone service?

He screwed over his whole team with his selfishness and doesn't agree with what Ben did.

Everyone needs to stay out of the media with this soap opera BS, save it for your tell all book after you retire. I'm so tired of hearing this crap from all over the NFL, just walk up to the guy at training camp and say "I don't like what you did" hash it out right there and move on.

I think Ben should have kept his mouth shut in the 1st place

Ben's the leader of this team. I have no problem with what he said. Ben having a rough go of it early in his career gives him justification to say what he said.

Ben knows the road Marty was/is on and he doesn't want to see Marty piss away his ridiculous opportunity like Ben almost did.

Wish Bryant would have taken the high road on this and just let the past be the past and focus on winning a Super Bowl, which is well within there grasp.

yup. Not sure why Ben felt the need to tell the media instead of telling Bryant directly.

hmm... the chances of a young WR with substance abuse issues taking the high road? Slim.

I think Ben has to be smarter as the leader of this team. Its not like Ben changed because someone ran to the media and dogged him out.

Non-issue. Ben and Bryant will have their private chat and move forward. Both are competitors and once that synergy is re-established on the field and the touchdowns start accumulating, all will be well again. Ben has a chance to have a full compliment of weaponry this season. Couple that with the best OL he's ever had in all of his career equals a chance to cement a legacy with another championship. Ben did not return for another season to deal with media-inflated drama. He knows Bryant will be a big part to their offensive success and will address anything he has to facilitate harmony in private and in the locker room. Winning will cure these ills.

justification? gonna need that one explained for me. seems like he piled on when MB was down to my way of thinking. im not sure publicly calling him out was the right approach for a young guy who was struggling to get it and needed support

in my personal opinion ben is a great QB, but not a great leader. i dont believe he knows how to be an effective leader. its like he tries to say the right things i guess, but more often than not it just doesnt come off right. i also think its BS this retirement talk is gonna come up every year now. maybe somebody call him out and question his commitment to the game.

love ben, but he isnt above criticism

I agree with this assertion, but unless you have a great coach that has mentored you in leadership, I doubt many of the young men in the NFL have this particular skill set. Veterans might help the youth on any given team with absorption of the playbook, field tactics, work ethic or sound athletic conditioning... but leadership, kind of iffy. Most people in regular professions attain these skills gradually through upward mobility in the workforce and company structured education seminars. Not sure the NFL does this... maybe they should along with other classes like money management maybe.

Anyway, agreed. Ben has not been a great leader (other than his gritty-toughness on the field). Doesn't mean he can't evolve to one.

I thought before his last failed drug test and suspension he swore to Ben and the team he was clean. In those circumstances I thought what Ben said was completely reasonable.

Am I the only one who remembers that lie of a promise (i.e., a.m. I wrong)?
