The cool thing is my kiddos are similar in their musical taste.

My motto (which the 3 of them completely agree with) is: "good music is good music. the genre is irrelevant".... Except, my 14 year old son does like today's rap - even then, he understands the difference between what they do and the pure art of it.

My daughter told me last week that she's getting tired of me saying, "what do you know about ____" (plug in your 70s-90's artist).
Recently caught her singing Billy Joel and i'm like, "WTF do you know about HIM!?!"
"Good music is good music", she replied.
Lol. Your kids sound like old men

I'm more a fan of good live music. I'm a concert junkie. I'll see just about anyone. I'm always surprised when people you like are bad and people that you think are bad turn out great. The worst is when bands get old and can't perform live any more. On the other hand, I've seen people like John Mayer and Nickleback and thought this is going to be the one of the most annoying nights of my life and then realized they both have real talent and put on a good show.

My biggest disappointments came when I realized Axl Rose sucks live and so does just about every rapper. I think that shaped my consumption of music more than anything and I've been on the search for the perfect live band. It made me realize how fabricated recordings really are and I refuse to go all in on liking a band now until I hear them live. The live experience is what I remember now when I hear certain songs.

That's another reason I think it's important to keep searching for new and up and coming artists. Bands perform better when they are younger and then deteriorate as they get older. Billy Joel is a prime example. Luckily I remember him 15-20 years ago when he was a great performer vs the recent past.

If your kids are really into music, I'd highly recommend a family vacation to Summer Fest over July 4th in WI. 10 stages of musicians simultaneously for 2 weeks. You'll all find something you love. I didn't have kids there, but being in WI, it's way more family friendly than most music festivals.

        Yes, they're fantastic.

Some of the bands that really stand out for me as amazing over the last 5 years would be ColdPlay, Panic at the Disco, Lady Gaga, Vince Neil (tiny show without Motley Crue and a house band - amazing energy and performer for an old guy), Fall Out Boy, and the Killers.

Best show ever was one time that I was at Nick's Fat City in Pittsburgh and Bruce Springsteen showed up. I've seen U2 and Prince shows a long time ago that were epic. The Billy Joel tour with Elton John was one of the best too. And seeing Metallica in their early days before they blew up was really good.

I've even gone to see some country shows that were really good. Not sure who they were but I liked some of the up and comers that are going back to rock roots recently. Not generally my genre, but it seems to be getting better. The local scene in Nashville is pretty good the last few times I've been there.

GTA and 2K have done a lot for introducing them to random music - as well as guitar hero back in the day...

We had "Rock Band" for the PS3 back in the day (I think my daughter was kindergarten age at that point, making my son around 3rd grade or so...he would claim the drum set, so my wife and I would play the 2 guitars, leaving my daughter on the mic), and because of that, even though she couldn't read yet, my daughter quickly learned all the words to "Say It Ain't So" by Weezer, "In Bloom" by Nirvana, and "Should I Stay or Should I Go" by the Clash, when all of her classmates were singing "Fruit Salad, Yummy, Yummy" by the Wiggles instead. Those were the days.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

i'll have to remember the festival.

they do love all kinds of music from many decades/eras - INCLUDING (but, not exclusive to) 70's, 80's stuff.

maybe i'm getting soft in my old age, but, this is the good ish... when there's not REALLY a lot of football talk, but, you can kinda "kick it" and get to know quirky stuff about each other... (or maybe it's cuz i just watched good will hunting again and heard robin williams talking about a similar topic)... lol
