The Steelers should still be building their team around Ben Roethlisberger

Landry is probably as good as Trubinsky and Mahomes. I'm being serious too.C'mon man. You're obviously assuming Ben will continue to be Ben, but you have to be prudent. In life, you need some insurance, whether its medical/life/car. Because when you need it, you'd like to have it. Ben is not old-old, but he is all of his 35 years, his quintessential dad-body included. If something were to happen to Roethlisberger, would you really feel good with Landry Jones or Mettenberger? That is like walking around with no medical insurance.
I'm not saying we should take a QB. BUT... we should be looking hard at QBs. AND... when/if we see one in our price range that we think can be something, we should take that guy. More and more, it is looking like they this Mahommes kid is just that.
I think outside of Watson these QB's are overhyped due to teams being pressed. It's a bad draft class IMO.Steelers 27

I think Conley is overrated. He struggled for much of his early career. Don't know how many times his name came out of my mouth in irritation. With that said, he did get much better but I believe he is a mid to late second round talent. He is better than Grant, more flexible in his hips, and just a better athlete. He will be a better DB but isn't a plug and play guy..
Shawn, let's take this away from QB for a second.
You know your Buckeyes. What are your thoughts on Gareon Conley?
He seems to be rising up the ranks and is garnering first round consideration at a position we need, and our staff tends to like adding players from OSU.
Is he legit, or is he simply benefitting from being in the same secondary with the likes of Malik Hooker and Marshon Lattimore?
I don't want another Doran Grant situation...Trolls are people too.Comment

A great route to success in the NFL is having a very good, young QB who hasn't been paid yet and a strong defense and running game. It worked for Seattle. Worked for the Steelers in 2005.The Steelers should build their team around the QB position because without a premium QB...there are no more championships. We live in a 3 second clip society who want instant gratification. They want a sparkly first rounder who will immediately step in and turn the D around. But, this isn't an either or...the Steelers can build around Ben and still look towards life after Ben. Drafting a QB in the first doesn't negate the need to draft starters on D. Look at Sean Davis and Hargrave. We got two quality starters in rounds 2-3. We can do that again this year. You can truly have your cake and eat it to. We can draft a QB in the first who is the future of the franchise, and draft more talent on D in the later rounds which has produced quality starters for us.
If you draft a replacement for Ben too early, you are robbed of that opportunity. Let's say Ben plays out his deal - 2 more years. You then only have 1 year to evaluate a replacement and determine whether to give him the 5th year option. You also only get 2 years of a cheap QB. The ideal is to have a rookie only sit for 1 year. Any more than that and you are hurting yourself.
The Steelers can, and should, focus on winning now while they still have Ben. Adding an edge rusher or another corner sets you up better to win now and in the future.Comment

What is he going to learn? What did Ben learn by waiting until Tommy went down?
What did Aaron Rodgers learn from Favre?
Brett HATED Rodgers and treated him like crap.
Favre's famous words "MY CONTRACT DIDN'T SAY I HAD TO TRAIN MY REPLACEMENT"
You guys are fooling yourselves if you think Ben is going to teach his replacement.Steelers 27

I believe you learn from being there, in camp, working with, practice and observing. I think Rodgers learned much from Favre. What is he going to learn? What did Ben learn by waiting until Tommy went down?

observing what? Brett didn't have good footwork and was a gunslinger.
seriously, I don't think observing has any benefits at all. It's just an old school way of doing things but recently the NFL has broken the mold on that mindset and we haven't seen any drop off IMO.
I think Aaron Rodgers could have started day 1 and he would have still been successful.Steelers 27

I think if you ask around the NFL, coaches, scouts and GMs nearly every one would say an ideal situation is bringing along a young QB slowly behind a seasoned vet. It's something I've heard since I was a wee tot. So, Dizz has some new theories and football revelations. Maybe you need to write the Steelers and let them know your insight.Trolls are people too.Comment

yeah I look around the league and there's maybe 5 really good QBs
