Of all of the problems the Steelers had yesterday the kicking game is way down the list.

The point is that it was a gimmick and this team is lacking consistency, preparation, and focus. Why call a play that has 50% chance of succeeding on something "he did back in college"? This is the NFL! Do you think Belichick would ever agree to such a call? The call really mirrored the rest of the playing calling on the day. This team needs work on fundamentals, repetitions and consistency.

Your argument isn't the same as the one they had when SEA had Marshawn Lynch on the 1, and threw the ball. Marshawn had a high chance to score there, and the subsequent pass play had a lower chance of success.

In this case, the regular onside kick has like a ~15% chance of success anyway. The Boswell kick may have more risk, but it also probably has a better chance of success if he hits it right. In fact, with all that pre-snap motion (i.e. to confuse), I think it was a brilliantly designed play-call. (Poorly executed by Bos, obviously.)
I wasn't hired for my disposition.

Mike Tomlin would let Chris Boswell try the rabona again
Posted by Darin Gantt on November 8, 2016, 3:15 PM EST

Not only did Steelers kicker Chris Boswell’s onside kick not go well, it went so spectacularly unwell that he became a viral sensation.

But Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said he’s seen Boswell do it enough in practice to let him give it another try some day.

With 48 seconds left and the game on the line, Boswell tried to kick the ball with the non-standard foot to catch the Ravens off guard. But when he didn’t catch the ball squarely, it rapidly became a farce.

“We felt comfortable about allowing him to deliver that kick based on what we’ve seen him do here in practice-like settings,” Tomlin said, via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com. “Would I give him the opportunity again? I would, based on what I’ve seen in preparation.”

A well-executed rabona can be a beautiful thing, and Tomlin’s only problem was Boswell’s inability to “execute under pressure.”

But unless Tomlin has seen Boswell do it in practice so many times that a mistake was the outlier, then the responsibility for going for a trick play in that situation falls on the coach who called a goofy kick, rather than the kicker kicking it goofily.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

it was an ONSIDE KICK... they only have 20% success rate. I'd take 50%...

Billicheat went for it on 4th down inside his own 30 and lost the game a few years back. I think he also deferred a coin flip in OT before they changed the OT rules.
