Marcus Gilbert to Cam Newton: Don’t be out there if you’re scared to take a shot

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton’s comments about the lack of calls he gets on what he believes are illegal hits by opposing defenses when he’s in the pocket reportedly got a response from the league admitting that Cardinals defensive lineman Calais Campbell should have been flagged for a low hit last Sunday.
Newton’s comments also drew a less positive response from Steelers right tackle Marcus Gilbert. Gilbert said that Newton is a “great player,” but drew a negative comparison between Newton’s reaction to the hits he’s taken and the way Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger
“Ben gets hit more than anybody in the league, and he never complains. C’mon, man. This is the game of football,” Gilbert said, via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com. “If you’re out there and you’re scared to take a shot, then don’t be out there, especially if you’re a running quarterback. [Defenses] are going to take shots at you. Just the way, his style of playing football, how he celebrates, I guess he gives the guys a chip, like let’s go hit the reigning NFL MVP.”
Gilbert said Newton and the Panthers should “change the whole game plan” if they want to see the number of hits he’s taking go down, noting that the Steelers have done that in recent years in hopes of protecting Roethlisberger better. Newton’s already said he doesn’t plan to change his style, however, so Gilbert’s advice may be destined to go unheeded.
