Marcus Gilbert to Cam Newton: Don’t be out there if you’re scared to take a shot

Marcus Gilbert to Cam Newton: Don’t be out there if you’re scared to take a shot

Posted by Josh Alper on November 1, 2016, 11:34 AM EDT

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton’s comments about the lack of calls he gets on what he believes are illegal hits by opposing defenses when he’s in the pocket reportedly got a response from the league admitting that Cardinals defensive lineman Calais Campbell should have been flagged for a low hit last Sunday.

Newton’s comments also drew a less positive response from Steelers right tackle Marcus Gilbert. Gilbert said that Newton is a “great player,” but drew a negative comparison between Newton’s reaction to the hits he’s taken and the way Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger

“Ben gets hit more than anybody in the league, and he never complains. C’mon, man. This is the game of football,” Gilbert said, via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com. “If you’re out there and you’re scared to take a shot, then don’t be out there, especially if you’re a running quarterback. [Defenses] are going to take shots at you. Just the way, his style of playing football, how he celebrates, I guess he gives the guys a chip, like let’s go hit the reigning NFL MVP.”

Gilbert said Newton and the Panthers should “change the whole game plan” if they want to see the number of hits he’s taking go down, noting that the Steelers have done that in recent years in hopes of protecting Roethlisberger better. Newton’s already said he doesn’t plan to change his style, however, so Gilbert’s advice may be destined to go unheeded.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Gilbert needs to shut the hell up. Whether Ben complains or not doesn't change the fact that a late hit or cheap shot needs to be called consistently regardless if its Ben, Cam or Brady.

Maybe because Cam ran through thr SEC Gilbert feels like he can take a dig at Cam but its foolish IMO. The guy protects QB's for a living.. shut up and make sure Ben doesn't get hit. The league even admitted they missed the call on Cam. How the hell does a ref miss a call when his only job is to watch the QB?

It pisses me off because Cam and Ben are the 2 QB's who are hit late more often due to their size. In a league where flags have been thrown 40% more often since 2012 we don't see the NFL protecting franchise QB's.

Is it just me or is that not exactly what a smart offensive tackle needs to highlight?

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

The dab is done. Once politicians started doing it it was no longer cool.

Not much to dance about when you are 2-5 and concussed.

His hat hat was ridiculous but his point stands. You can't let franchise QB's get hit more often because they are bigger. That's not how this is supposed to work.

How is is someone more worried about fashion than winning? It's possible to care about winning and wearing ridiculous threads.

Lmao... That's what happens when you care more about the past than the present. Cam isn't at Auburn and Gilbert isn't at Florida. Think before you speak Gilbert.

Guess I'm in the minority on this one.
Newton comes off as a whiner to me. Why?
because his complaints seem to only surface when he loses.
pretty sure these hits come in games they have won
, but he's silent then. It's a pattern with him and a way to deflect.

                          I hear you North.

Most of Cam's hits have come when he has tried to run the ball. At that point, he is no longer a QB but a Runner. I don't feel sorry for his whiney a$$ one bit. Dude needs to grow up, act like an adult and a professional. F'n grow a pair and take you hits and losses like a man! I am surprised the entire league has not put him on blast.

This is what is wrong with today's NFL and our society all together. Too much crying, participation awards, Nerf-ism, and political correctness.

I agree with everyone, that Gilbert needs to stay in his lane in this case. I also agree that Cam is showing a bit of mental weakness, whining about this. However, my biggest takeaway from this is that--Cam has no roughing the QB penalties since the '15 season til now?!

That's a pretty good argument for Cam.
I wasn't hired for my disposition.
