Tomlin: Roethlisberger, Cam Heyward out this week
Posted by Josh Alper on October 18, 2016, 12:21 PM EDT

Steelers quarterback Landry Jones wasn’t willing to rule Ben Roethlisberger out for this weekend’s game against the Patriots after Roethlisberger had surgery on the torn meniscus in his knee on Monday, but the guy who actually makes the call about who will be in the starting lineup did it for him.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said what most people expected given the nature of Roethlisberger’s injury when he met the press on Tuesday. Roethlisberger will not play against New England, leaving Week Nine against the Ravens as the earliest possible return date since the Steelers have a bye week after playing the Patriots.

Tomlin also confirmed that Jones will start at quarterback with Zach Mettenberger serving as the backup.

The Steelers will also be without a key defensive player. Defensive end Cam Heyward will miss his second straight game as a result of a hamstring injury. The Steelers gave up a season-high 474 yards against the Dolphins last Sunday without Heyward in the lineup and the Patriots will make it tough for them to make a big improvement without Heyward’s help.

Having linebacker Ryan Shazier, strong safety Mike Mitchell and free safety Robert Golden in the lineup would boost that effort, although Tomlin said their status won’t be known until later in the week.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

      Tomlin's injury update: Post Miami

Coach Mike Tomlin updated the team's injury situation during his Tuesday news conference.

      TOMLIN’S INJURY UPDATE

“We released a statement yesterday regarding Ben. He had an outpatient procedure to repair his meniscus on Monday. He can be characterized as out this week. I’m not going to get into speculating on how long it’s going to be. When he’s healthy, he’ll be back to us. So we’ll deal with that on a week-to-week basis.

“Cam Heyward will continue to be out with his hamstring (as will) Cody Wallace, with his knee. We have a number of guys whose availability will be based on their practice participation. That list includes Markus Wheaton (shoulder), Ryan Shazier (knee), Shamarko Thomas (groin), Marcus Gilbert (ankle). A couple of additional injuries – developing ones from the game the other day – Rob Golden (foot), Mike Mitchell (knee). Mitchell came out for a portion of the game and was able to go back in. DeAngelo Williams has had some inflammation in his knee, and we’ll keep a close eye on that. As always we’ll deal with a myriad of these things, we’ll keep an eye on these guys. But their practice participation, and the quality of that participation, will be our guide as we formulate a division of labor relative to this game.”

What's to be gained from officially ruling out Big Ben? So the Patriots can totally focus on the complete shutdown of our running game and laugh when Jones tries to complete a pass?

Heyward out will also hurt big time. I expect Blount will have success running the ball.

I'm more concerned with the multidimensional pass catching 3rd down back James White than one trick pony early down back Blount (a puff, puff, pass run game, if you will). Dion Lewis (a similar back to White) played well the last time we played them.

Reading other websites' breakdown of last week's breakdown, I think it is expecting quite a lot from this young defense to play a perfect game against NE. And that is what it will take to beat them. If the offense was playing the way they should, then the margin for error on defense might be a little more favorable.

It seems this defense is still trying to find life without Troy, Farrior, Hampton, ASmith. It's been a real struggle replacing this lost leadership. Thought Timmons was the guy, now, not so sure.

I think we should play a soft style defense with big cushions and no pass rush. This is sure to fool Brady and the Pats

I was wondering about this, too. Why not wait until the last possible minute to let your opponents know for sure who's playing QB? I mean, I think BB will have his team ready anyway, but why make it any easier on them than you have to?

Our best two players on defense, Heyward and Shazier, didn't play at all. Our third best player on defense, Tuitt, got hurt during the game. Our fourth best player on defense, Timmons, was literally throwing up in the end zone. Our fifth best player on defense, Mitchell, got hurt during the game. Vince Williams and Anthony Chickillo also got hurt in this game. Robert Golden and Jarvis Jones were coming off of recent injuries. Our defensive personnel is decimated. We need the upcoming bye week in the worst way.

It wouldn't fool anyone...dude went under the knife on Monday...he's not playing the following Sunday unless it's the freaking Super Bowl. Especially with the bye week afterward, which would give him 20 days to rest up before trying to come back to face a division rival on the road.
