Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

What is the difference between pts/gm for a defense and total points against?

Total points against is a useless comparison here, since Tennessee played one less game.

I understand... just trying to help with an explanation.

And total yds can be deceiving as well. Example the offense or special teams hands the defense a short field every game... that will lead to low total yds against.
Over the course of a season though these things tend to even out a little.

The problem with stats is that they don't tell you the WHOLE story. For example: Game 1 Tenn Vs. Atlanta - 31 to 24 Atlanta but Atlanta's offense only scored 24 points. Still a poor showing by the Tenn Defense, but those 7 points aren't taken out of their defenses ppg. Likewise, we've had two Pick 6's. Those 14 points show up under offense ppg and don't show up in the defenses ppg. I think our defense is playing better than Tenn Defense and am very happy with our progress. Just have to take some stats and look beneath the surface.

I never understood why a pick 6 counts as points for the offense of the intercepting team and points against the defense of the team that was intercepted. They should be categories of their own: defensive points scored and offensive points allowed. I think it would paint a better picture of a team's offense and defense.

Def. not a fan of Tennessee, but the wife is from Nashville and my brother in law is a fan. He thinks that the defense is playing better than their talent level. But then, they've really only played one good team.

If DL was such an idiot, we would get someone not so influenced but his poison. Go outside the organization.

We would have lost younger Butler had we kept DL. His "tweaks" to DLs GENIUS scheme are working.

The truth is that the transition to more pass rush from the line began LAST YEAR. When was the last time our returning sack leader was a defensive lineman? We have real capable pass rushers at the position for the first time. We don't start free agent level talent at defensive end anymore.

This is absolutely true. Cam H was just beginning to shine last year and Tuitt was a year away. We've always been good at using our talent. The nonsense that we didn't is about the most annoying thing on these message boards.

Cam Heyward fined for eye black tribute to his father

Posted by Mike Florio on October 14, 2015, 2:29 PM EDT

Steelers defensive lineman Cameron Heyward recently wanted to honor his late father, Craig, during his team’s Week Four game against the Ravens. And so he did, applying the words “Iron” and “Head” to his eye black.

And, inevitably, Cam Heyward has been fined for the gesture.

“Got fined for honoring my Dad who bravely fought cancer on my eye black,” Heyward said on Twitter.

Heyward is the second Steeler this week to take issue with the league’s refusal to allow players to honor family members beyond the narrow exception for pink in the month of October. Running back DeAngelo Williams wanted to wear pink in his uniform all year to honor his mother, who died of breast cancer last year at the age of 53. The NFL said no.

The league is being criticized for its stance as to Williams, and the league surely will be criticized for fining Heyward. While the league obviously needs to set barriers on when and how the uniform will be something other than, you know, uniform, the NFL has created this problem by allowing deviation from the concept of a uniform for two specific causes.

They do it in October for breast cancer awareness, and they do it in November for the “Salute to Service.” While both are worthy causes, why does the NFL select those two but no others?

How about prostate cancer? Colon cancer? Skin cancer? All three are deadly but preventable. How about one week in October for each of those causes?

The NFL has invited these questions and any ensuing criticism by selecting two causes to the exclusion of all others. Maybe there should be a way to use the NFL platform to promote other causes, too.

                                http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/10/14/cam-heyward-fined-for-eye-black-tribute-to-his-father/
I think that Heyward should go back to just normal eye black for the KC game to honor the deal he cut with the league, but every other player on the team should wear "IRON" and "HEAD" against the Chiefs...and the Rooneys should cover the $5K+ fine for all of the other players. That would be a quarter million dollars well spent, in my eyes.

League cuts deal, Cameron Heyward stops eye black memorial

Posted by Darin Gantt on October 21, 2015, 5:40 AM EDT

The NFL lacks self-awareness or apparent sympathy when it comes to its uniform policy, but they solved their Cameron Heyward problem with the one commodity they have in abundance — money.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com, the league reduced both the fines the Steelers defensive end incurred for his “Iron Head” eye black to honor his late father who died of cancer. That’s a reasonable stance, especially since another player spent last year wearing a similar personal message wasn’t fined at all.

The first offense was $5,787 and the second would have been $11,576 fine , but a source said the fine was now “significantly less.”

Heyward had a conference call with league officials last night to address the matter, saying on Twitter that it was a “respectful exchange.”

“I consider myself a team player and someone who puts others before myself, and I don’t want to be a distraction to my teammates or the Steelers organization,” he wrote. “With that, I will not be writing on my eye black going forward anymore. I will be honoring my father in other ways on and off the field.”

Heyward started a charitable partnership with EyeBlack.com, and anyone buying pre-printed “Iron Head” eye black will be making a donation to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation, which his father Craig Heyward was associated with before his death in 2006.
