Defensive Stats today - do they tell the right story?

I missed the game , so reading the posts here and watching vids. Hearing how Shazier did great, we got a turnover, and they only scored a few points ... all good right?

Then I went to the stats ... giving up 400 yards, 100 of them rushing ... etc.

But stats are just stats, so I gotta ask ... did they look great? And how did our defensive backfield communication look this week?

    Thanks!

We got our "6-PACK" - time to work on a CASE!

Basic defense after they was up big, yards didn't come until late 3rd.

They got all of their yards in the second half, the defense was nasty today.

How did our defensive backfield get their PhD's in 10 days ... my local high school team could have scored on them last week, and this week sounds like WOW!

They gave up 28 last week to a team that just dropped 40 today.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

essentially the defense gave up one long splash play.

the niners had a 19 play drive that took up over 9 minutes - and scored a 47 yard FG.

these stats were fantasy garbage and nothing else. If you had Kaepernick on your fantasy team - you're happy. but if you were watching him live, you were pulling your hair out.

Let's take it two steps further:

The 49ers had three drives of 15+ plays and scored a total of 3 points in those drives...

The defense looked like many Steeler defenses in the past, they bent but didn't break on at least three drives forcing the 49ers to use clock and come away with very few points. While the Steeler offense was putting the game away, it's a good formula for success for this group if the defense can continue to improve. Yesterday, the defense was clearly aided by Ben and the offense, scoring early and often will help the young defense. I still don't want the game in the balance and the defense on the field. I'd rather the Steelers be behind and Ben with the ball than the Steelers to be in front and the defense on the field.

It was fun to watch the defense getting to the ball with speed and force. I can do without Mitchell diving at the legs of a ball carrier who is clearly stopped and risking a penalty. I was happy to see Hyde didn't get injured on the play. Harrison while he didn't really make any splash plays looked like he was having fun out there and he played pretty good for a 38 year old OLB in the NFL.

I would rather be in front and Ben with the ball...

As for Mitchell, as long as it wasn't after the whistle, I don't necessarily have a problem with that...better him diving for Hyde's legs with the ref swallowing his whistle than Hyde somehow squirting free for 5 yards after our guys thought he was stopped...

The score was 29-3 going into the fourth.

SF drives beginning with (0:07) left in the third:

                        64 yards - TD
80 yards - TD (75 yard pass to Torrey Smith)
79 yards - One yard short of TD on fourth & goal

That is 223 yards in the last 15:07 - and the closest that they came at any point was within 18 points.

It was the kind of play that many fans criticized Suggs for last year, no need in my opinion, the game is dangerous enough for these guys.

Well, the lead and the ball is best, but of the two scenarios I suggested, I'd rather be behind and give Ben the chance to win it with a drive rather than leading and turning it over to the defense to hold the lead.

The offense was quick striking, too. They were only on the field for 23 minutes, while the D was on for 37. SF put together a few drives that didn't end in points, too.

                              Great D performance yesterday.
