I about fell asleep watching Dupree clips physicality was seriously lacking, and I watched every single sack JJ had and I don't believe he beat a OT one time his senior season for a sack. By no means am I calling any of them busts...obviously. I'm doing my best to trust the organization and trust the process of development. With that said, I have seen the Steelers pass on more fundamentally sound, physical linebackers and run after guys who can run fast or in JJ's case has massive hype and college production. I hope in a few years I can sit back and go oooooooh thats why they drafted these guys. I truly want to be wrong on this one and realize the professionals know best. Of that group IMO, Shazier is the only one I see who has star potential.
I don't think so. I think they all totally reflect the Steelers philosophy when it comes to drafting in the first round: the guy be a productive leader of his college football team (I think Bud was voted a team captain, Jarvis SEC DPOY). We don't take flyers on guys.

Staying on Jarvis for a sec: While I do agree with the general sentiment around him (needle doesn't seem to be ticking up) and the apparent fact that he really doesn't beat guys 1-on-1, I don't really think that means he can't be productive and approach fan expectations of him. To be perfectly honest, my favorite Steeler (Greg Lloyd) didn't necessarily whip Tackles because of his speed or strength. And Jarvis' coach (Peezy), while he feasted on poor Tackles, he really didn't do much against the Jon Ogdens of the world (who did?, but you get my point).

Both Porter and Lloyd were more blitzers than they were pass-rushers. The scheme (elements of surprise) really dictated how often they got to the QB. Both those guys actually needed that element; neither really was good enough to consistently do it on their own talent. I think Jarvis has that ability... or at least I hope he does.

Jury still out on Dupree? Why? He already has two pre-season games under his belt. We should be able to determine his career accomplishments by now.

        Haha.

I actually think though, that Chickillo's presence will push Dupree. He's not blind; Bud sees this 6th round white, college two-gapper doing things (at the same position he is) in camp. It means an increase in reps for him, and at some point, a decrease in Bud's reps? If Bud's a competitor, he's going to step up his game, to get some of the approval from the coaches that Chickillo is stealing from him.

From that same article...and sticking with the original thread...

            * Just about every day Tomlin watches the outside linebackers in their one-on-one competition, and Wednesday he watched Jarvis Jones enjoy a second consecutive strong showing against tight ends who were attempting to set the edge in the run game. Jones' strength and leverage appear to be improving daily.
