So, a 25K bill is 5.2% of his annual salary pre-tax. 5.2% of a nurse's salary at 45K is $2,340, I don't think that nurse would really want to have to pay that bill. It wouldn't be crippling, but it is a hefty prank for someone making 45K (the same as 25K wouldn't be crippling to Hills, but still nothing to sneeze at).

I think the practice of having the rookies pay is fine within limits, maybe they have to pay couple thousand dollars as a welcome to the NFL, but I think 5% of your first year's salary is a bit steep. I'm happy to hear that Ben helped him out and never asked to be repaid whatever the amount that Ben covered.

My whole point is that 5% would be a big hit to most of us who live and work in the real world. But when you are dealing with the salaries involved in the NFL, 5% is a lot more. Put differently, With a salary of just under $500k, 5% is closer to just being a rounding error. In the real world, you feel it a lot more.

I'm not saying that it makes it right - I don't believe that I ever said that. But I have no sympathy for Hills. If Osama Bin Mendenhall thought the practice was so awful, he could have covered the tab. Or spoke up. Instead, he lied about the events to try to promote his own career.

I'm definitely not supporting Mendenhall, only trying to put some perspective on the bill that Hills was stuck with at dinner. Now, the reality is that if you take a dinner tab as an isolated incident of 5.2% of anyone's salary that is a steep night out. However, for someone making 45K as compared to 483K the day to day stuff isn't as easy. Eggs, milk, clothing, etc. must be paid for and will put cause for pause on someone making 45K more than it will on someone making 483K.

As I mentioned, I'm glad Ben helped out Hills and never requested any form of repayment.

Expecting Hills to pick up that tab was almost as ridiculous as the tab itself. $25,000? For one night? What a colossal waste of money.

I disagree. It's not different. Do I "cry" for Hills? Of course not...but the practice is still wrong.

Now, if you actually read what basically everyone on this thread wrote, you would know that isn't true.
Actually, my post was NOT about you...but, if the shoe fits, feel free to lace that &!+€# up and wear it.

I don't resent him (well, I do, since he didn't work out and he was a wasted draft pick, but that's besides the point) I'm just not gonna cry for him and throw him a pity party. I get that he worked hard, AT A GAME and put himself into position to make millions of dollars to play that game. These guys aren't paying the amount of taxes you think they are. Why do you think that they start foundations? Tax write offs. If they're smart they get very good financial advice and leverage that money. If they don't then that's their problem for being an idiot.
and for whoever said that it was 5% of his salary; it was his signing bonus. If I got a sign on bonus for my job I'd have no problem taking my friends and coworkers out for a meal that took up that part of my salary. These guys are vested in the NFL retirement after what, 3 years?

No one is "crying" for Hills. And if you like other people spending your money for you...more power to you. Hey, my family could use a really nice dinner. Invite?

Shawn, if I hit the lotto (essentially what happned for Hills), I'd buy every damn person a beer in the steeler bar I go to. And I don't know a damn one of them
I don't like anyone spending my money. But If I go out with a group of guys that are going to be helping me keep a million dollar a year job, I don't mind spotting for dinner.

don't make nearly the money he does though.
