McShay says the pick at #22 is...

Bud Dupree

As the NFL just released the 2015 NFL Schedule Tuesday, the 2015 NFL Draft is right around the corner and just days away. ESPN.com's NFL Draft expert Todd McShay released his Mock Draft 5.0 Wednesday, and in doing so projects the Pittsburgh Steelers will select pass rusher from the University of Kentucky Bud Dupree with the No. 22 overall draft pick. Most think the athletic Dupree will be off the board before the Steelers select, but Dupree is the raw type of player who has the exceptional ability to get to the quarterback the Steelers have been missing the past few seasons. See what McShay had to say about the selection:
22. Bud Dupree - Pittsburgh Steelers (11-5)
COLLEGE: Kentucky Class: Sr HT: 6-4 WT: 269 POS: OLB

Analysis: Cornerback is a big need for the Steelers, so Kevin Johnson and Marcus Peters are possibilities here. But they are also coming off a season in which they had the fewest number of sacks (33) since 1989, and they don't have an impact pass-rusher. Dupree is raw, and needs to show more consistency at the point of attack. But he is an excellent athlete who has tremendous range versus the run, upside as a pass-rusher and the ability to drop in coverage when asked.
Dupree has the tools to be a legitimate outside linebacker for the Steelers, but just as McShay say in his anaylsis, Dupree is extremely raw. If the Steelers decide to go with Dupree if he is still on the board, fans shouldn't expect a player capable of stepping onto the field and dominating on Day 1. Dupree has the athleticism to make plays and contribute, but likely in a reserve role until he gets acclimated to going against better offensive tackles, the schemes of the NFL and the overall faster play at the professional level.
If Dupree falls to the Steelers, this pick could be a no brainer, but with depth also needed at cornerback, nothing is certain heading into April 30th.

I have no problem with easing a rookie into the lineup gradually...no one should expect a day one full time starter. Have Jones and Harrison rotate snaps on the weak side, and Moats and the rookie rotate snaps on the strong side.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

I think Dupree goes to atlanta all the way at 6.

Exact kind of Athlete Dan Quinn had with Bruce Irvin

Well, the Jets are 6, Atlanta is 8. I think the Falcons go with Beasley there, but if he goes in the top 7, then Bud could be going the Dirty Bird.

I think Dupree is vastly over rated. I hope we don't pick him. Looks awkward rushing the passer. Stiff.

thats what i meant lol

I dont think Beasley gets to 8 with the jags, skins, jets, bears there....although if the Jags want Gurley they have shown they arent afraid to draft anyone anywhere. I think Dupree goes higher than most think, i dont necessarily agree with it though

I only saw him play one game and he looked OK but looked like total speed rusher. I would still prefer Owa Odi who literally destroys blockers.

I agree. If we can't get Ray I don't want to use 1st on OLB. If we are looking at a project anyway I will trust the coaches to find one later on and take their time with him. Corner to me has reached desperation status. So much that I would not be surprised if a trade up for Waynes or staying put and getting Peters despite his baggage. Any decent QB will shred us with what we have. It won't be pretty. A stud day one corner could change that drastically.

Vastly overrated as a top 10 pick, but at 22 Dupree becomes insanely interesting...pending who else is on the board that is.

He is very explosive, very fast, and very strong...he really has an incredibly high ceiling

Hes also dumb, kind of awkward, and plays a bit more like a MLB.

But he is a DC's dream of the type of player to scheme for and build around

Can you really build around "dumb and awkward?"

Is he another Jarvis Jones? Different? Serious question, I don't know? Will he be another player still leaving us wanting in Year 3?

Hes dumb like James Harrison and Patrick Peterson...doesnt necessarily relate to on field performance.

Ive watched a TON of him...I could see him playing an elephant role, I could see him lining up EVERYWHERE like Adalius Thomas, and I could see him as a nightmare off the edge. He so tough to analyze because Kentucky was SO bad on offense and defense. He was clearly the best player on the field though and some of his short comings are a direct result of him having to do everything.

Jones is a good run defender, a relentless player, physically limited with poor (but improving) technique. Dupree is twice the athlete Jones is but hes not a polished football player. A cross of Ezekial Ansah and Bruce Irvin is what I think..both guys were versatile schematically, both were fantastic athletes, both were raw, and both guys were standouts on bad teams even if their tape wasnt perfect.

Dont get me wrong, he is a scary pick, but extremely high reward

Thank you. Good info. Would you consider Owa Odi as more of a sure thing? He seems perfect fit for the "elephant"
