I'm not sure if this defense is just one player away - the secondary looks to need a whole lot of help - but if you can trade up and find a dynamic pass rusher, I think you absolutely do it. Having a guy who is a real terror off the edge will help cover up deficiencies in the secondary and should also help the rest of the pass rush as protections get shifted. Help is needed in the secondary, too, but adding a real dynamic edge rusher is the first step towards rebuilding a dominant defense.

I think the secondary needs more reps. When Ike and Troy were out for 2 or 3 games our DB's looked much better IMO.

Blake and McCain should be resigned
Cortez will be back, Gay is solid.

Mitchell will return and Shark should get more time.

I think this unit is young and should turn the corner next year.

Why aren't you sure Negative Nancy? This team won the AFC North Division which may be the toughest division of all. IMO, they would have won the playoff game versus Baltimore had they been able to use a healthy Le'Veon Bell. Why wouldn't one great player on defense not propel them to a championship?

Stop looking for a perfect team to win a Super Bowl. It doesn't take one anymore. Every team is going to have some deficiency somewhere on their team. f the Steelers had a lock down corner like Patrick Petersen you better believe it would change the whole scope of this defense and make the rest of the secondary better as well as the front 7.

Minor details. By my account we are solid with Heyward, Timmons and probably McLendon and Tuitt. That leaves seven question marks on the defense either because of performance or expiring contracts. I think that is just a little more than "one player away."

LOL I wish you guys would visit other teams forums and maybe you do I don't know but read them sometime.
This is now a PASSING LEAGUE guys and every team is having a hard time defending the pass and when they do they can still easily give up a pass interference penalty instead.

Just about every fan of every team is complaining about their secondary issues.

Think about it! Our very own QB almost had 5000 passing yards! A Steeler QB with 5000 passing yards? He tore up the colts and then last night that same defense stopped Manning!

1/2 second quicker on a pass rush can help any secondary.
shut down corner can help a slower pass rush
BUT overall our defense did an ok job this year!

We saw first hand how a great Raven front 7 helped their weaker secondary.

RELAX!!! We will get it right!

I'm not looking for a perfect team - I realize that there is no such thing. The Steelers don't need Patrick Peterson and Revis at corner. But the secondary is one area where the lack of pedigree has really shown - the Steelers went into the Baltimore game with nobody higher than a 6th round pick at corner. They need more size and coverage ability at corner. I'm not giving up on Cortez Allen but you have to add a corner with some pedigree to that group.

I'm also not sold on Mike Mitchell, and given that Golden seemed to be the #3 strong safety, I'm not sure that the Steelers are sold on the oft-injured Schmarko Thomas. The D could use at least one safety and one corner, but more than anything, I think the Steelers need a pass rusher who can be a difference maker. There is nobody on the defense right now who is a game changer.

Honestly, I think we have the players on D we just need to simplify the scheme.
Maybe we should knock off the dust on the old 5-2 defense we ran in middle school. We can simplify the offense too. Maybe the veer.

A simplified scheme means having to field superior football players that can win against their opponent. I don't see where this defense has those players, especially in the secondary. Schemes can mask some flaws but obviously not multiple flaws.

Every team has holes and injuries play a big part of any season. The Steelers are paper-thin at key positions, the restocking needs to continue on defense.

it would be nice to have some more defensive backs that can cover receivers long enough for the pass rush to get there also though...

I actually think we are weaker at safety than DB. McClain, Gay and Blake are not horrific.

by defensive backs i meant safeties and CBs, but i agree with you. our safeties made ZERO interceptions this past season, and that truly is horrific...

I'm close with you Dee...I'd say two players away though, a pass rusher and a DB.

Lemme use an analogy and please hear me out.

Phil Jackson is considered a coaching guru. He runs a triangle offense that "once you get it" it works like magic. Here is the problem though... he had the best player in the game in Jordan and Pippen was his sidekick. Once he got to LA he had the best player in Kobe and Shaq was a close second.

Right now Phil Jackson is with the GM of the Knicks and they are HORRIBLE. JR Smith just left and was quoted saying "I just want to play basketball, I can't do that if I'm out there thinking and second guessing myself"

Now look at the Spurs. They are 10 deep and each guy pretty much plays his role. IF you are a passer you are coming in and passing the ball. If you are great at screens you are going to run screens. If you are a shooter, you post up in the corner and shoot the ball...

I know Steeler fans hate believing the players when they say our D is complex but it's the truth. I think DL is a lot like Phil Jackson. He needs the best players in the league (Troy, A. Smith, JH) in order for our system to work.

I'm not saying we run 3-4 straight up with a basic scheme but maybe we can go from 6 possible assignments to 3 on a given play? Maybe instead of having 100 blitzes to memorize it's 25? Sometimes you need to remember it's just football, line up, beat your man and throw in a corner blitz or 2 and call it a day.

I'm also aware that we will draft players every year so we will continue to get players but I don't think we need 4 or 5 guys for this D to improve.
