Troy Polamalu, Ryan Shazier ruled out for Sunday

      By Kevin Patra
      Around the NFL writer
      Published: Nov. 4, 2014

The Pittsburgh Steelers will be without two big-name defensive starters Sunday when they take on the New York Jets.

Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that veteran safety Troy Polamalu and rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier are both ruled out.

Polamalu suffered a sprained knee in the Week 9 matchup versus the Baltimore Ravens. The veteran left the game and did not return. It will mark the 33-year-old safety's first missed game since 2012.

Shazier also left Sunday's game after injuring his ankle early. The rookie will miss his fifth game of the season.

Will Allen is expected to step in for Polamalu and Sean Spence should slide into Shazier's snaps.

The Jets are absolutely pathetic in the secondary (worse than the Ravens). Meanwhile their defensive line is actually not bad against the run. It would not be shocking if Roethlisberger hangs another 500+ burger on the defense again this weekend.

The Jets are 3rd in rushing and 6th in defense (or vice versa) and they've benched Geno Smith, his replacement, Mike Vick had a 106 passe rating last week. Mike Vick has played well against the Steelers in the past. This game will be closer than many think, IMO.

The Steelers are on a high right now, but history shows inconsistency over the past 41 games, hopefully, the last three games are the new trend and not the 38 games prior to those 3.

The Steelers should win this game. But they should have beat the Bucs, too. Percy Harvin is the type of guy who could give this defense fits, and mobile QBs like Vick have given them trouble. It's a shame that Shazier is hurt again; he would have been the perfect spy for Vick.

I think the Steelers need to come out aggressive on both sides of the ball. Hit Vick early and often and attack a very weak Jets secondary.

Hit Vick early and often...that was the recipe for Flacco and Luck too. Its funny how the rules changes are designed to protect the QB, yet they make them even more of a target in the pass heavy offenses of today.

Attack! Attack! Attack! Every play on defense go after Vick and pound him. If Geno Smith comes in do the same thing. On offense, plan to go into this game throwing the ball. The Jets front 7 is pretty good and I doubt we have success running the ball so don't waste possessions using the run to set up the pass. Just throw to set up the run. I would also dust off the no huddle to exploit a weak secondary and wear down the Jets front 7.

The chargers shredded the jets on the ground, id like for the steelers to commit a little to it. Cant be outright scared away by the dline, we have some good run blockers and a pretty good RB. Decastro vs Richardson is a brawl

I guess what I was looking at was the Jets are 32nd in the NFL in passing TDs allowed/gm at almost 3. Dare to think BR can complete the TD trifecta?

I dont know, but six more TDs would be a seasons worth for many QBs in the span of 3 games.

Do the Jets have a front seven that is significantly better than Baltimore?
Actually, my post was NOT about you...but, if the shoe fits, feel free to lace that &!+€# up and wear it.

I can see a lot of play action working well here. They have to be afraid of Ben's arm, and might adjust the run D to confound our pass game. It won't work, but it will allow our run game to be very effective. I just don't see how they can stop our offense.

They have a really good front 7 - Richardson and Wilkerson in particular are very good. Probably not better than Baltimore (whose front 7 always seems to play its best against Pittsburgh) but still very good.

I like the Jets DL better than the Ravens DL, but when you add in the LB's as well, Baltimore has the better overall front 7.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.
