Jason Worilds said this week that he is not getting as many chances to rush the passer because his coaches have him covering receivers more often.

In fact, his chances to rush the quarterback have been reduced considerably. Pro Football Focus breaks down every play for every player and lists whether a defender rushes the quarterback, covers a receiver or plays the run on every play.

In passing situations only, they have Worilds rushing the quarterback 128 times and covering passes 96 times through six games. That means he rushes 57.1 percent of the time when the opponent passes. The three outside linebackers who have played on the right side this season for the Steelers have rushed the quarterback 135 times and covered 89 times or 60.2 percent of the times.

Those percentages of rushing the passer are way down. Consider that in 2013, Worilds rushed the passer 378 times and covered on 100 plays, according to PFF. That meant he rushed 79 percent of the time last season. In 2012, LaMarr Woodley rushed 64.5 percent and James Harrison rushed 62.1 percent.

The breakdown on the rushes by the three right outside linebackers this season go like this, according to PFF: Jarvis Jones 39 rushes, 47 covers for 45.3 percent rushes; Arthur Moats 67-29 for 69.8 percent; and James Harrison 29-13 for 69 percent.

This is kind of a chicken or the egg debate. Is Worilds not getting sacks because he isn't rushing? Or is he not rushing because he hasn't been effective as a pass rusher?

For $9 million, the Steelers are not getting near enough production out of Jason Woodley, er, Worilds.

        * Steelers OLB Jason Worilds played his best game of the season. He and Brett Keisel did a nice job collapsing the pocket on the third-and-6 when the Steelers had the Texans backed up on their first drive, but they were only rushing four and no one else could get off a block to sack Fitzpatrick when he ducked and eluded the pressure. Fitzpatrick scrambled and found an open receiver to keep the drive alive. They later scored a touchdown to cap a 10-play, 94-yard drive.

Worilds continually pressured Fitzpatrick all game and had a hand in both turnovers at the end of the first half. He was in on the tackle when Foster fumbled. Worilds hit him first and Spence made the jarring hit. On Keisel’s interception, Worilds forced Fitzpatrick into a bad throw by getting pressure.

          • Jason Worilds might not be a $10 million-a-year player in the long haul, but he sure was one Monday: He had seven QB hurries, four tackles and — get this — four defensive run stops all on his own. And this despite dropping into pass coverage on 11 of his 62 snaps. On one play late in the game, he drove Houston right tackle Derek Newton back so far that Newton ran into Ryan Fitzpatrick as he threw.

On a far less tangible level, it was nice to see him smile for a change afterward.

“It isn’t about me,” he said. “Our whole defense got after it.”

---I had been referring to him as Jason Worthless, but must admit I posted just about everything that is in the next article. Frankly, I was pleasantly shocked.

On the Keisel interception play Pit was alignment I had not noticed before. Now I don't usually pay attention to these things but this caught my eye.

There were four down lineman on the LOS. But they were 93 Worilds, 97 Heyward, 99 Keisel, and 92 Harrison.

No other players on the LOS. LOLB, DL, DL, ROLB ??? I had not not noticed this before. What is it called? Is that the nickel thing they talk about? IDK

Prior to this I had noticed 5 and even 6 players lined up on the LOS. Zero pass rush and with single blocking on most everyone and often also a blitzer. Still no pressure. This was scary.

But on the Keisel play shockingly there was heavy pressure. Heyward, Harrison and yes Worilds too all were within arms length of the QB and in his face forcing the quick throw which Keisel [who did not penetrate and was pushed back] but tipped the pass and well, everyone saw what happened.

This play gave me some hope for Sunday. Maybe somehow with a little extra effort and focus at least some pressure will be put on Luck.

His impact will be inside running sideline to sideline and covering TEs, otherwise, he'll be another pick that didn't pan out, IMO

He's not that light in the britches...He's actually about 240 and shredded. Problem is he plays light in the britches....his problem here and at tOSU.

Kaboly Football Focus grades Jason Worilds as a +27.4 against the Colts.

Jason Worilds quietly had two straight disruptive games in a row.

Worilds also rushed the passer much more yesterday as opposed to dropping into coverage.

Worilds has stepped it up. The closer he gets to that contract...the better he will play.

Which should be a red flag of epic proportions as far as actually giving him a large contract.

When you see him in person, he looks a lot more like a safety than he does a LB.

With passing now dominant in the league, maybe looking more like a safety isn't all that bad. Yes, I know that an OLB has to take on some big men but I hope he can use speed to get the job done. Spence is not exactly heavy in the britches either. "You go to war with the army you have."

The D ran more of a classic "Blitzburgh" type gameplan than it has in a long time.
