wheaton was drafted in the 3rd, but yeah hopefully he runs away with the #2 spot. Evans would definitely challenge him for that, which is what I am hoping for.

Evans at split end, wheaton flanked, and brown moving anywhere and everywhere but playing out of the slot with a 2 way go on most plays.....dirty

What are we saving him for? Pretty sure Cotch realizes we drafted Wheaton to be the future...not some 3rd or 4th WR.

Fans on here pencil in any draft pick on O as an instant starter.... so it makes sense to think Wheaton will have the inside track to be the #2.

Last year Cotchery was the evil WR who stunted Wheaton's growth until he grabbed 10 TDs, today he's Jerry Rice in his prime...I love it LOL
ours is not to wonder why just invert and multiply...

              Joe Person @josephperson:

In non-Cam news, WR Jerricho Cotchery wrapped up visit w/ Panthers. Left w/out a contract, per source. Deciding between CAR and #Steelers.

Cotchery is just the epitome of solid, jets certainly regretted letting him go and the steelers probably will too

I don't think the Steelers have the money for both w/o a Ben restructure and Woodley's cash doesn't get freed up until June 2nd.

I think they have 6 million, definitely enough. You give me those two guys and they can head to radio city for the draft

Guy Whimper contract puts Steelers $2.4 under 2014 salary cap

By Neal Coolong on Mar 17 2014

The light-hearted comparison to a sweater at Christmas sucks into Pittsburgh's precarious salary cap position. It begs the question of whether anything else is coming.

Signing Guy Whimper to a one-year contract equates roughly to getting a sweater for Christmas as a 12-year-old. You're old enough where you know you can't express disappointment, but you're also old enough to be aware the finite resource in the gift pool is just that much smaller.

Whimper's contract shaved off about $1 million from the Steelers' salary cap, putting them at about $2.4 million with both running back James Starks and wide receiver Lance Moore coming to Pittsburgh Tuesday. Jerricho Cotchery is still a pending free agent, and Alex Carrington has to/had to have looked nice at some point.

Like that 12-year-old carrying the red-and-green monstrosity, hoping not to hear the dreaded words, "try it on!", we latch onto hope the Steelers have one of two deals pending - the expected extension for Jason Worilds or a restructure of contract for linebacker Lawrence Timmons.

If the Steelers are looking to sign multiple players, some they will absolutely need (there is no depth at receiver or running back behind Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell, respectively), a deal for Worilds will have to be worked out.

Another way to look at this, though, is the fact the Steelers will have eight offensive linemen under contract heading into camp. That's a position that will really not have to be looked at in terms of draft picks, which also means it's not a position unit they can expect to grow old quickly. Neither the running backs nor the receivers are old, either, and the linebackers got dramatically younger with the release of Larry Foote and, in terms of old man injuries, LaMarr Woodley.

In building a young team, they'll still need veterans to fill in spots and push starters, or hold off challengers. Perhaps that's where Whimper really fills in - a player/coach kind of job.

There are parts of the country that are so cold some days in January, you realize warmth is more important than looks, and you can usually get a long-sleeve t-shirt over an ugly sweater. If it's warm enough, you're willing to overlook its hideousness.

So while the Steelers remain resigned to re-signing sweaters, and the idea of the Red Rider B.B. gun is pretty much gone, there are still some cool stuff under the tree. They just need to clear some more stuff out to find them.

Jerricho Cotchery deciding between Steelers and Panthers

By Neal Coolong on Mar 18 2014

Charlotte Observer beat writer Joe Person is reporting Tuesday Steelers free agent wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery left Charlotte without a contract, and is deciding between signing with the Steelers and the Panthers.

Cotchery visited the team Monday evening and into Tuesday, his first visit to a team outside of Pittsburgh in his free agency quest.

Considering what's left on the market, it could be considered something of a bidding war for Cotchery's services. Neither team will overpay, but if one team would up the other's offer, it'd be the Panthers. They have even less depth at the position than the Steelers do, and more cap space as well.

The Panthers are still likely to pursue other free agent receivers on the market, but Cotchery would be an excellent addition to a team with a budding quarterback and the hopes of establishing a strong run game.

If he would sign with Carolina, they could consider it payback to an extent. The Steelers signed Panthers free agent safety Mike Mitchell to a 5-year deal earlier in free agency. Mitchell replaced Charles Godfrey after he ruptured an Achilles early in the 2013 season. Mitchell replaced him, shined and found himself with a free agent deal with the Steelers.

Whimper only cost a few hundred thousand against the cap. $2.4 million is more than enough to sign Cotchery. If, for some reason, it isn't, they can restructure Timmons. I hope they avoid the restructures and kicking the can down the road, but they can do it if needed.
