Cleveland Browns unveil new logo that's just as boring as before

Yes. That's a new logo. No, seriously. It is.

    By: CHRIS CHASE

After more than 40 years with the plainest logo in professional sports, the Cleveland Browns took a bold step to the future on Tuesday by unveiling a new logo that … looks pretty much as plain as before.

The rejection of a revolutionary change had been hinted by team owner Jimmy Haslem, but I don’t know if anyone expected this little change. It’s so boring Cleveland could barely write any mumbo-jumbo about the inspiration behind the alteration. I mean, Nike can get 500 words out of a new font and this is all Cleveland could muster with a new “identity?”

Our updated helmet logo is reflective of today’s modern Cleveland – the design honors the past while evolving into the future. The iconic brown and white stripes stand tall over the orange helmet – a new orange color that matches the passion of the Dawg Pound. The new brown facemask represents the strength and toughness of Cleveland.

If you showed 100 NFL fans the new Browns logo, 99 wouldn’t notice any difference from last year. The other would be a Browns fan. (Sorry, buddy.)

Crazy. IT’S ALMOST EXACTLY THE SAME THING.

Sorry for yelling. I guess there are major differences. I mean, look how different the orange is!

Wild! (Also, you’re the Browns. Call it brown. No one’s buying this orange nonsense.)

The team has only had two official logos in its 69-year history. From 1948-1969 the team used Brownie the Elf, a cute, little guy who looked like he was AWOL from the North Pole or the Keebler factory. Then, in 1970, the team switched its logo to the plain brown/orange helmet that’s still in use today (there have been the slightest of variations over the years, the white-facemasked helmet below was in use during most of the 1990s).

That helmet logo stayed the same even after the Browns left Cleveland for Baltimore, then came back as an expansion team three years later, all while taking over the original Browns’ history and record books, something that makes sense but it still pretty odd if you think about it. (According to the NFL, the Baltimore Ravens began play in 1996, even though the franchise started as the Cleveland Browns in 1946. And the expansion Browns, who started in 1999 have that history dating back to ’46.)

All of it has led to the revolutionary new direction the franchise took today by darkening the shade of a color that’s not even in its name and making the facemask a little different than before. We’re living in a brave new world. No, correction: We’re living in a Browns new world.

Fine if you want to change the logo but that is not the kind of changed that really needs to be 'unveiled'.
If I was a Browns fan, Id want everything changed in a significant way....maybe back to the days of the little brownie guy when they were actually halfway decent.

Roger Goodell thinks Jimmy Haslam is doing a heck of a job

Posted by Darin Gantt on February 26, 2015, 6:47 AM EST

Since Jimmy Haslam took over the Cleveland Browns, they’ve gone 16-25, drafted a party-hard quarterback upon the advice of a homeless guy, and gotten themselves in trouble for illegal texting during games.

They’ve changed strategies, coaches, General Managers and team presidents, saw their best player repeatedly suspended for substance abuse, and unveiled a new logo which involved moving one block over on the Pantone chart.

Oh, and Haslam’s been investigated on federal fraud charges resulting in paying a $92 million settlement to the government.

But you know who thinks Haslam’s doing a swell job? NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

Via Marla Ridenour of the Akron Beacon Journal, Goodell praised the work Haslam’s doing to turn around (?) the Browns.

“I’m a big fan of Jimmy Haslam,” Goodell said. “There are few quick fixes in this business and the league is so competitive. You really have to build a foundation. If it was easy, anybody could do it. There are 32 competitive teams.

“He’s learned a great deal. He’s making very smart decisions for the long term. I think this community — and I know this is Browns country — I think they’re fortunate to have Jimmy Haslam as an owner and we’re fortunate to have him.”

As endorsements go, that ranks right up there with “Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job.”

Goodell made the comments during an appearance at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce dinner, taking questions in a relaxed setting from Hall of Famer Dan Dierdorf, and not reporters, who would have certainly leaned in on the assertion that there’s nothing to see here.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Report: Buster Skrine could get up to $7 million per season

Posted by Mike Wilkening on February 26, 2015

If the Browns are to bring back free agent cornerback Buster Skrine, it could cost them quite a bit.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Skrine is anticipated to garner between $5.5 million and $7 million per season in his next contract. Skrine is expected to be in demand in free agency, the newspaper reported, citing several unnamed sources.

The 25-year-old Skrine intercepted a career-high four passes in 2014 for Cleveland. He has defended 18 passes in each of the last two seasons.

                    Skrine (5-9, 185) is No. 46 on PFT’s Free Agent Hot 100.

If the Browns were to re-sign Skrine, it would likely keep second-year cornerback Justin Gilbert in a reserve role. The No. 8 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, Gilbert had a disappointing rookie season.

Browns agree to sign QB Josh McCown. 3 yr deal.
The Browns now have McCown, Manziel, and Connor Shaw, as back up.

They all sound like back ups to me.

                          Browns sign Josh McCown

Posted by Michael David Smith on February 27, 2015

Josh McCown is a Cleveland Brown.

The veteran quarterback and the Browns have agreed on a contract today, the team and McCown’s agent Mike McCartney both confirmed on Twitter.

McCown was released this month after a rough first year in Tampa Bay. He previously had a very promising showing during the 2013 season while filling in for Jay Cutler in Chicago. Cleveland has to hope it’s getting the Chicago version of McCown, and not the Tampa Bay version of McCown.

Cleveland also has to hope that McCown can work well with Johnny Manziel, teaching Manziel what it takes to become an NFL quarterback but also starting for the Browns this season if Manziel isn’t ready.

The arrival of McCown in Cleveland will almost certainly mean that free agent Brian Hoyer, Cleveland’s starter for most of last season, is going to sign elsewhere.

                            Feb. 28 Updates

Browns sign QB Josh McCown (3 years, $15 million): D Grade

The Browns are always good for some laughs in the offseason. This contract is ridiculous for multiple reasons. One is that McCown failed on a 2-year, $10 million deal with Tampa Bay last season despite having Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans to throw to. McCown won't have anything close to that sort of talent in Cleveland. Another reason is that the Browns could've just re-signed Brian Hoyer for about the same amount of money, or perhaps even less. Hoyer is both younger and better than McCown. Neither is a viable starter, but I don't see how a 36-year-old McCown is any sort of upgrade over Hoyer.

Because they blew it with Hoyer, he wouldnt play for them if they were the last team on earth.

Steelers should give Hoyer another look. As a backup he is clearly better than Jones and might even push Gradkowski.
