Don't be surprised if Dick LeBeau retires...

I've been on both sides of the "scheme vs. players" debate. I've seen enough missed tackles to know that the players must shoulder some of the blame because they were put in position to make plays, but the lack of pressure and 10 yard cushion bother me as well. The question is, can the scheme work again without so many holes? i.e. NT, FSComment

You adjust your scheme to maximize the abilities of the players you actually have and don't hope the players can do what you want because you love your system and don't want to change. While they have similarities I really don't think the game has passed LeBeau. the game passed JoePa a long time ago. Do you really think LeBeau would fail if he still had HARRISON, FARRIOR, POLAMALU & IKE in their prime. this is a talent issue, not a scheme issue. Here We Go Steelers, Here We Go...

Lebeau adjusted his scheme quite a bit. For example, Troy played ILB to cover the talent deficiencies with that unit. I'm not sure how this team's talent translates any better into a 4-3. For Lebeau to have this defense in the middle of the pack, despite serious talent issues, is quite an accomplishment.Comment

Shhhh, it must have been Lebeau's fault, because he's old.Lebeau adjusted his scheme quite a bit. For example, Troy played ILB to cover the talent deficiencies with that unit. But talent and scheme aren't the only issues. The problem with old people (bout to get ageist on y'all), is the lack of attention to detail. Back when I was a kid, my mom and dad were all about the carpet in the house being clean. The dog had to stay outside, us kids had to wash our feet before we came in, etc. If you did dirty up the carpet, my dad would break out the shammy and every chemical known to man, to clean it up. Today, they have a dog in the house all the time, there are stains from food spills, pet spills, etc. all over... and it doesn't really bother them any more. Because, they're too old to give a d@mn any more.
You know why kids raised by their grandparents have a bigger chance of getting into trouble? Cuz old folks can't really keep an eye on their kid, make the kid accountable, as they could when they were younger themselves. It's about accountability. So (getting back to coaching
, he doesn't hold people as accountable as say, a hard-a$s like Haley. Younger guys are going to poke, prod, annoy, frustrate, make you want to kick their ass... to get the most out of you. Old guys? They don't have that energy. That is the problem that happens. Look at Woodley, for one. The guy got complacent. You can probably shine a light on the defensive coaches as well, who don't have a coach above them (the DC) who is sometimes a d!ck, making them accountable for the various things they do.
I wasn't hired for my disposition.Comment

The Steelers were one of the least penalized teams in the league this season.... doesnt sound like a attention to detail problem to me.But talent and scheme aren't the only issues. I really don't think Dick's the problem. It's the lack of talent. And not developing the young players or keeping them. If you really want to look at the D during our recent SuperBowl runs, James and Troy carried the unit. And there were a bunch of solid role players around them. James is gone. The role players are old. Troy's playing MLB to try to stop the bleeding. And the talent is in complete disarray.
We're developing a bunch of young role players. But we could use another Troy/Deebo. And I don't know who that is yet. Worilds had a stretch where he was putting up Deebo like production from the left side. Heyward looks like he has the potential to be our best 3-4 DE ever if he can be consistent. But who will be our star in this system? JJ and Timmy are the ones that need to be, but I think they're just cogs in the system. We need a premiere playmaker somewhere on the D side of the ball. That's what's really missing.sigpicComment
