Re: The Steelers are really in their heads

I have to agree if these guys are doing all this and all that then, they are allowing the game to become bigger than it needs to be. I know we haven't had very much luck against the Cheats but, I do not recall our players acting like such children over it.

By the way I've always wanted to ask this question and did not want to take up the board with another thread that only requires an answer and then, end of discussion.

" Why do teams defer the opening kick when they win the coin toss ? "
To me I remember Tomlin doing that his entire second season and it must have made some difference, we won the Super Bowl.

If you defer the opening kick your team gets to choose what side you want. You want the wind on your side in the 2nd and 4th quarters.
Thanks for that YMC, so is the coin toss really just saying: If you win, you have a choice of kickoff vs. receive, OR which side you want to start the game?

Hmm ... I can't remember well, how is that different from how the coin toss USED to be, before "defer" became a formal option???

        Thanks!

Actually what I wrote it wrong in a sense. What deferring actually means is you are deferring your decision on whether to kick or receive until the second half begins. So obviously in the second half you will choose to receive. So the other team has to choose to receive in the first half. And you get to choose the endzone you want to defend.

If they chose the direction(after you defered to them) then they would be giving up their right to choose whether to kick or receive in the 1st half and your team would get to receive the kickoff twice.

But now that I think about it, I guess the other team would get to choose direction in the second half, thereby not giving you the wind advantage in the 4th quarter.

The way it differs is that before the defer rule the opening coin flip decided everything for the entire game (kickoff/receive and sides).

Sorry for the confusion on my earlier post.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

To add to the things already listed as reasons the one big reason why is the make up of the team. A good D team will play D first in hopes of a 3 and out and good field position on the punt. A good O team will take the ball first in hopes of scoring.

Farrior, Clark React To Terrell Suggs’ T-Shirt

                                By Kym Gable
                                January 12, 2011

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The Ravens and Steelers face each other for the third time this year.

So far the Steelers have kept their mouths shut, but the same cannot be said for the Ravens.

Terrell Suggs let his t-shirt do the talking for him at a news conference in Baltimore Wednesday.

The shirt read “Hey Pittsburgh” and showed an illustration of a raven with its middle finger up.

As the Black and Gold gets ready for one of the most physical and fiercest rivalries in the NFL, KDKA caught up with fans and players at a taping of the PNC Steelers Huddle Wednesday night.

“A bird giving the bird?” James Farrior said. “What can you expect from those guys, but he’s going to have to do all his talking out on the field when we play Saturday.”

Safety Ryan Clark added, “I don’t think enough about the Baltimore Ravens to make a shirt about them.”

Both players say the unsportsmanlike style is something they would never showcase and something the Rooneys would never allow among the ranks of the Black and Gold.
