My Man Big Ben

There were some positives in the game. We gave up a silly special teams TD and blew an assignment that cost us 2 points and just as importantly we lost possession. I really hated the play call at the time but have since calmed down. BA wanted to run out of a pass set. I want to pass out of a run set. But the guy has to make that block. Taylor read it all the way and made a game winning play. Crap. And on the bootleg TD, I kid you not, I was yelling at the screen for Harrison and Woodley to stay home and contain the edges. I had basically conceded the 1st down, but I knew it was a good time to bootleg. What was bad was that i thought it would have a pass option, that's what I was actually looking for, and it was just sanchez. I was pissed.

So about Ben. His consistency and execution have to get better. And he can not become a victim of his own success.

Since the Saints game, he seems to start the game with passes too high and too long. Missing on too many of passes. Then as we have discussed in other threads his decisions the go down field vs. taking the quick hit when its there. At the beginning of the game he went deep to Wallace. Wallace had Cromartie beat for a TD but Ben grossly overthrew him. No big deal, the man was open you take the shot, the ball got away from him, these things happen. I think it was 2 plays later and its like 3rd and 5-6yds. Wallace streaks down the same side line, this time Cromartie is on him like a 3 year olds pajamas. Ben, seemingly miffed by the previous debacle wants Wallace all the way. The problem is that its 3rd down and he's covered. this is compounded by the fact that sanders crosses wide open in front of Ben and could have easy had the first down and more had the first defender missed the tackle on the slippery surface.

Ben has got to convert that 3rd down.

Sanchez and other mediocre QBs in the league make a living mastering the short completion. it keeps the chains moving and it keeps the defense honest. Whether its a slant or an out or a simple stop route. They get their timing and mechanics together and go to work. What these QBs cant do is be like Ben. Keeping plays alive and going down field once the X's and O's fall apart. That's Ben's niche. But what if Ben mastered the basics, the fundamentals, the easy stuff, and put it in his arsenal.

I personally think that he would be one of the best QBs in history. Yeah you heard me. Somebody has to tell Ben that its not about being one or the other, he can be both, he can be unstoppable.
Moving forward Ben needs to change his pre game routine because he's coming out terribly flat and its not going to cut it come playoff time. He needs near game speed reps and alot of them. Against Cincinnati, both Randle El and Ward had to make spectacular high flying catches. He'll tighten up the ship.
As for BA, I think he called a pretty good game, he quickened the pace and the Jets were guessing wrong on our passes and run calls. He mixed it up pretty good. The safety aside.

I didn't get to see the game because I was traveling. Sounds like it was a pretty clean, well played game on both sides. But when I see that Mendy has 106 yards on only 17 carries, I wonder why in the hell they didn't give him the ball more?

or why they didn't give Mendy the ball instead of to MM on that safety, I'll bet Mendy would have been able to muscle his way out of the end zone.

Ben is one of the best passers in the league on 3rd down. The problem is we start games with jumbo 2 TE sets, and it slows the offense because we insist on trying to show we can run.

We don't attack teams anymore. We run the ball.

he has been wide and high with some throws lately.

but i would still put my money on the guy to deliver a drive when the chips are down.

this team has still not put together a complete football game yet. thats disappointing at this juncture of the season.

Ben seems to have the attitude that he wants to extend the play, get the big completion- really blow teams up. This is great TV...great theatre..but sometimes Chadman would really like the 4 yard completion when it's there.

Ben is marvellous at making the unthinkable play happen. He's reasonably good at taking what's given to him. If we could just bridge the gap between marvellous & reasonably good- the Steelers would have the complete package.

Don't get Chadman wrong- Ben is a great QB- but he could be 'better'. If in 15 years time we say "That Ben Rothlesberger was great, but if he could just have taken advantage of everything given to him..." Chadman suspects we'll all be a little disappointed.

As for Mendy only having 17 runs & 100+ yards- that's how it SHOULD be. Keep him fresh & you get better results. Chadman has no problem at all that MM got a few carries & that Redman gets a few normally. If Mendy can have 20 touches a game, you know you'll get the best 20 touches he can give. Once he gets up around 30+ touches you are getting a tiring RB- not as productive.

17 is too few, but we waste too much time with Moore. When Mendy needs a breather put Redman out there.

Possibly too few. 20 is more the number in Chadman's head, but 3 carries is nit-picking. MM has the added advantage of being a decent recieving option out of the backfield- if only we passed to RB's.

Redman should get 5+ carries a game.

Not totally against adding another RB in the draft to replace Moore- a speed guy.

Moore catches his passes either in RB screens or when he's lined up in the slot.

In fact, Redman caught that pass in Baltimore and he wasn't even supposed to be on the field.

Chadman prefers Redman as the battering ram type RB- to grind out a game late or in the slush.

Moore is pretty good at those RB screens- but a more explosive, CJ Spiller type might offer a new wrinkle to the offense.

If BA is back in town next year- a Mark Breuener style TE is on the wish list.

Mendys low carries is a result of the creative play calling and mixing things up. You take out Mendy and put in Moore, then go 3 wide in shotgun and yeah im thinking pass all the way, partially because Moore is a better pass blocker, but what did BA do, he ran out of this formation sometimes. Is it too tricky, maybe, but at least the guy is thinking. I really think we can do something with the way he called it yesterday. With Polamalu and miller back things will be even better.

We are about 5-6 more completions away from hammering teams. Im telling you guys we are this close. We have lost to most of the good teams that we have played and I think this is the difference.

We have that, Matt Spaeth.

If we are insisting on this multiple TE crap I want a TE who can move, a lighter TE, an H-Back type.

H-Backs have to be light? David Johnson has all qualities of an H-Back, minus the apparent weight limit.

http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/ds ... &genpos=FB

Scouting report on David Johnson, not that it's needed. Anyone who has watched him, knows he has H-Back skills.

Johnson is more like an H-back, much like the Steelers use Sean McHugh
