There were some positives in the game. We gave up a silly special teams TD and blew an assignment that cost us 2 points and just as importantly we lost possession. I really hated the play call at the time but have since calmed down. BA wanted to run out of a pass set. I want to pass out of a run set. But the guy has to make that block. Taylor read it all the way and made a game winning play. Crap. And on the bootleg TD, I kid you not, I was yelling at the screen for Harrison and Woodley to stay home and contain the edges. I had basically conceded the 1st down, but I knew it was a good time to bootleg. What was bad was that i thought it would have a pass option, that's what I was actually looking for, and it was just sanchez. I was pissed.
So about Ben. His consistency and execution have to get better. And he can not become a victim of his own success.
Since the Saints game, he seems to start the game with passes too high and too long. Missing on too many of passes. Then as we have discussed in other threads his decisions the go down field vs. taking the quick hit when its there. At the beginning of the game he went deep to Wallace. Wallace had Cromartie beat for a TD but Ben grossly overthrew him. No big deal, the man was open you take the shot, the ball got away from him, these things happen. I think it was 2 plays later and its like 3rd and 5-6yds. Wallace streaks down the same side line, this time Cromartie is on him like a 3 year olds pajamas. Ben, seemingly miffed by the previous debacle wants Wallace all the way. The problem is that its 3rd down and he's covered. this is compounded by the fact that sanders crosses wide open in front of Ben and could have easy had the first down and more had the first defender missed the tackle on the slippery surface.
Ben has got to convert that 3rd down.
Sanchez and other mediocre QBs in the league make a living mastering the short completion. it keeps the chains moving and it keeps the defense honest. Whether its a slant or an out or a simple stop route. They get their timing and mechanics together and go to work. What these QBs cant do is be like Ben. Keeping plays alive and going down field once the X's and O's fall apart. That's Ben's niche. But what if Ben mastered the basics, the fundamentals, the easy stuff, and put it in his arsenal.
I personally think that he would be one of the best QBs in history. Yeah you heard me. Somebody has to tell Ben that its not about being one or the other, he can be both, he can be unstoppable.
Moving forward Ben needs to change his pre game routine because he's coming out terribly flat and its not going to cut it come playoff time. He needs near game speed reps and alot of them. Against Cincinnati, both Randle El and Ward had to make spectacular high flying catches. He'll tighten up the ship.
As for BA, I think he called a pretty good game, he quickened the pace and the Jets were guessing wrong on our passes and run calls. He mixed it up pretty good. The safety aside.
