Report: Russell Wilson, Arthur Smith Had Rocky Relationship

Report: Russell Wilson, Steelers OC Had Rocky Relationship

The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback and play-caller weren't the best co-workers this past season.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are beginning their journey to figure out their next quarterback plan, which could include Russell Wilson. However, with a new report emerging, the team may be letting that ship sail as they turn to a new quarterback in 2025.

Wilson took over as the starter in Week 7, finishing the season for the Steelers with a 6-5 record and a first-round exit in the playoffs. During his time as the QB1, Wilson had fans excited about the future and also worried the team was going to bring him back. Only to leave them here, in the offseason, waiting to see what happens.

That may not happen if the team retains offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. According to Pat McAfee Show correspondent Mark Kaboly, Wilson and Smith didn't have the best working relationship throughout the season, and that Smith preferred Justin Fields.

"Reports surfaced during the year that offensive coordinator Arthur Smith preferred Fields over Wilson but that was never substantiated," Kaboly wrote. "Still, despite Wilson and Smith spending countless hours together after the typical workday watching film and publicly joking about it, a team source recently said that Wilson and Smith did not have a very good working relationship but fought through their differences as best they could."

Kaboly said it's "unknown" whether or not that relationship will play a role in the Steelers decision, but it certainly doesn't help his case.

Head coach Mike Tomlin said Fields took the steps to become a 17-game starter this past season, and the Steelers will consider him returning as their QB1 next year. With a riff between Smith and Wilson, the team may be inclined to go with the 25-year-old, with management and coaches likely spending a significant amount of time on the decision.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson has never shied away from expressing that returning to the team next season would be his ideal outcome, doing so

I wonder how true this is, but a nice testament to both that they disagreed with the plan yet still worked closely together. Will see if Smith returns if Wilson does as well. Wilson is a savvy guy, he will always say the right thing and keep the door open, but I'm sure he is checking his options.

First, I don't care if the QB and OC are best buddies. Ben had some of his best years with the coordinators he didn't like.

I'd LOVE to know specifically what Wilson didn't like. Was he told to play it safe? Did he hate the horrific scripted 1st quarter plays? Did he feel the offense was too predictable? Was he tired of the run game poorly attempting to setup the pass? Did he hate pitches to Najee?

Smith made several comments early in the year that were thinly-veiled shots at Russ while he simultaneously gushed about Fields.

If Smith takes the Jets’ job, say goodbye to Fields.

Peyton and Carroll had rough relationships with Russ, too.

Maybe the toxic positivity thing is an act. Shocking, I know.

The media & fans talk a lot of garbage that ain't true. Carroll & Russ were together a long time, what 10 years?. From what i've heard Russ say, he thought of Pete Carroll as a father figure. Russ wouldn't have flown out on a moment's notice for Pete's retirement dinner if they didn't have a close relationship IMO.

Wilson does have a history of being a cancer and teams dumping him.
How is it possible to have the best owner, best front office, best gm, best HC, good/great drafts every year and good FA acquisitions every year, but only have 3 playoff wins in 14 years?

Maybe Smith wanted him to throw over the middle? Or to be able to go through progressions on passing plays?

I hope you don't like Fields then because he not only struggles with progressions but with pre-snap reads as well. Way worse then Russell in progressions

Thank you, finally a sensible comment regarding QB play on here. It's so bizarre that so many want Fields playing over Wilson given what is on tape. I really don't get it.

I would suggest folks also check out analysis vids of the Ravens game from the Steelers offensive side and tell me again how QB was the problem in this game.

Wilson got a couple garbage time TDs, nothing at all the first half before the game was out of reach. Failed to score 20 in his last 5 and in 7 of 12.

They shackled Fields with a simpler offense and didn’t let him audible, which probably contributes to the apparent “pre-snap read” issue.

I don't think Fields will be the next franchise QB. I agree with the limitations you have here.

Not sure how much worse Fields is at progressions than Wilson though. Wilson is: check primary, try checkdown, else wait to get sacked. Fields at least has the option to run if his primary is covered (and took fewer sacks than his career average this year I think). I don't think either of them are good at this. And both take too many sacks. Fields fumbles too much though...and since all the snap issues went away when he got sat down, I think that was him. Need to fix.

I also think that Fields will cost something like $10MM less / year than Wilson (maybe even less). And give similar performance (worse passing, but much better rushing...plus gives us an explosive player on offense, which we desperately need).

Ultimately, I think we need a bridge while we rebuild. I think extending Fields will be a signal that we're moving more in that direction that we usually do.

That's why I expect us to extend Wilson and pretend that we're "trying to win a SB" or something. But for us, I think that means "try to make the playoffs and hope something magical happens".

I think anyone who thinks we can genuinely compete for more than a WC berth and likely lose as a heavy underdog without making big changes on both sides of the ball is kidding themselves.

But trying to get Fields for 3 years or so hopefully means we wouldn't be in the "draft a QB come hell or high water" mode we seemed to be in when we picked Pickett.

He got those TDs in the 3rd quarter lol, that's hardly garbage time. But check out film of the game, I mean the offense and coaching just sucks, I was watching one guy doing the 22 and the only thing he could point out was not throwing to Pickens on a couple of plays and on one play it likely still would've been 4th down.

The whole team kinda sucked though didn't it during that streak? Come on Windy you know what happened and it's hardly Wilson's fault. Tomlin got conservative and teams had the offense on tape, no adjustments, typical December collapse under Tomlin into the playoff beat down.
