I like the idea of trying to accumulate high picks like the Bills did in 2018 (traded their 1st and 2x 2nds). If we do make any of the big trades people talk about (I doubt we will...except maybe GP), I think we should try to get 2026 picks that are a round higher than we could get this year if possible.

But do you remember how the Bills got that ammunition for the 2018 draft? I had forgotten this.

It was the Bills who traded back in 2017 to get KC's 1st, 2nd, 3rd that year + 1st in 2018. KC selected Mahomes. So maybe the Bills didn't really recognize the importance of the QB position? Bills got a CB instead.

I guess trading away from Mahomes gave them the ammunition to trade up for Allen the next year though.

They likely invest in an NFL team for the purposes of making money, not throwing it away.

they also got their QB’s at 10 and 7.

its possible for us to move up and get a QB at 10 or 7 if we believe in the guy but you have to be willing to build around that player instead of having him fit into a run first offense.

Until we pass to set up the run I think we continue to see the same thing every year.

We just need to impose our will and beat the man in front of us and execute better.

Yes, but the majority shareholder of the Steelers had to put together a lot of money to increase his stake. I don't know if he has any other streams of income, so every decision is a dollars and cents decision. $50M is that percentage out of his pocket. The minority stakeholders aren't paying that without an increased stake.

Yes, IIRC the Bills used that extra pick to move up to around 11 or 12, and then moved up again to 9 to draft Allen.

FWIW, the reason the Rats just lost to the Bills is that they made way to many silly mistakes.

We're currently a team with a lot less talent than the Ravens. Our margin for error against good teams is zero (and we still might not win).

Pickens and TJ would bring the necessary draft capital, but this organization doesn’t have the will to do something so drastic. They’ll never risk finishing below .500.

and certainly, even if it costs a little more money, we should bring in better assistants -- but I think part of the problem with that is Tomlin. He has to be the smartest guy in the room, and is threatened if they bring in anyone who might present too much of a challenge to the way he wants to do things.
Bumping this because another thread mentions coaching up 'developmental players'. When a team has the smallest coaching staff in the NFL, who exactly is spending all this time with these developmental projects the Steelers draft? Team philosophies are clashing here. Finding a rising star HC will be tough with the smallest staffing budget in the NFL. What up and coming coach wants to work with that kind of restriction. And while Rooney claims their pay is about average, it doesn't really mean much with a coach room the size of a closet.

It never bothered me in theory the size of the coaching staff, but in pairing that with drafting developmental players then it should require more coaches who can commit to working individually with the players.

We often talk about the OL and the coaching techniques, but I wonder how many possible assistants out there who can also teach the individual hands technique.
