I still like Thomas in the first, actually, after these signings I like him more, because, Lebeau won't feel obligated to insert him into the lineup immediately.

This is how the Steelers operate, they create depth at positions with veterans and then draft their replacements to watch for a year or two and then step in.

Pappy, Will Allen is "only" 27, so he still has several prime years left, but as you say they are creating depth.
Hmmm...thanks Leb, is there another Allen that is a safety nearing 30? Regardless, as we've both mentioned, they're building depth at safety and I'm hoping Thomas is there and they take him. From what I've read he can play SS, FS and CB, if that's the case, then the value is too good to pass up and the versatility is something that Tomlin looks for in a player.

    Pappy

yes, coincidentally enough there is another Will Allen who currently plays DB for the Miami Dolphins.

there are a lot of good CBs that can be had in Rounds 2 and 3, I would rather fill another need in Round 1.

Oviedo, what do you think we should do in Round 1?

Thomas can play all three positions in the defensive backfield, value and versatility, a Mike Tomlin trade mark. Spiller would be great value at 1.18, but not as versatile. :P

The "other" Will Allen is a CB who plays for the Miami Dolphins. Just got popped for a DUI.

I would look seriously at the following group of players: Sean Weatherspoon, Ro McClain, Jared Odrick, Dan Williams and Brandon Graham.

The only player I would consider on the offensive side of the ball is Spiller because IMO he will be very special. If Spiller is still on the board at #18, I wouldn't hesitate or regret picking him.

The Steelers are really solidifying their depth. Now you have 2 WRs that had 50 plus catch seasons that could be sitting at your #4 & #5. Who knows if Sweed turns the corner or not. Really would be great if he did. Batte's ST value could make the Steelers carry 6 WRs if Sweed shows up. Battle could be like Sean Morey when he played for the Steelers.

I would like to see one more signing. Sheppard or Buchanon at CB for insurance. I was also hoping Koogs could lure Incognito in to play C for the right price. I think he would be an upgrade over Hartwig. Many people don't like his attitude but I think it is the right attitude for his position as long as he doesn't cost the team. Playing for a contender in comparison to the Rams & Bills might have an impact on his behavior...You would hope. Hard to believe a rookie C will start in 2010 for the Steelers and even harder to believe that Hartwig's play will get better. The Steelers must think the answer is on the roster.

the Steelers are reportedly very high on Doug Legursky as their center of the future.

Pittsburgh Steelers 2010 Offseason Positional Review - The Centers
by Blitzburgh on Feb 15, 2010 4:23 PM EST 29 comments

              Justin Hartwig

Age and 2009 Stats: 31 years old; 16 games (16 starts), 3 penalties, 7 sacks allowed.

              Contract Status: Signed through 2012

2009 Analysis: Hartwig, like many of his teammates along the offensive line, had an up and down year in '09. Many thought Hartwig played himself out of an extension during the '08 Super Bowl, but apparently the organization was pleased enough with his first year in Pittsburgh to re-sign him last summer. Though Hartwig was probably the most consistent lineman in '08, I don't think the same can be said of him in '09.

2010 Outlook: Hartwig has started all 32 regular season games since signing with the Steelers two years ago. He'll almost surely be the team's starting center come next season pending unforeseen injury. He'll turn 32 years old during the season and probably has another couple of years playing at a similar level.

              Doug Legursky

Age and 2009 Stats: 23 years old; 9 games (0 starts), 0 penalties, 0 sacks allowed

              Contract Status: Signed through 2010

2009 Analysis: After spending all of the 2008 season on the practice squad, Legursky made the active roster and dressed in a number of games last season for Pittsburgh. The former Marshall standout even made a few appearances as a fullback in a 'jumbo' package along the goal goal line. Fortunately or unfortunately - depending on your point of view - Legursky has still not had an opportunity to make a start at center due to Hartwig's durability the past two seasons. Still, by all accounts it looks as if Legursky has done what he's needed to do to remain the team's number two at the center position.

2010 Outlook: With Hartwig signed through 2012, Legursky probably won't get a chance to prove his abilities to be the team's starting center until at least the 2011 season. Assuming the Steelers don't target a center in this April's draft, Legursky will though have a role to play on this team next season, including on special teams. What's fairly exciting about Legursky is that he's still only 23 years old (he'll turn 24 before the start of training camp). In another year's time, with the right amount of development under new offensive line coach Sean Kugler, Legursky could be ready to step in to a starting role in 2011.

Foster is listed as having 14 appearances last season, with 4 starts.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

I don't see where that says they are high on him. Like my last sentence said...Maybe he is on the roster "Legursky". With Hartwig's play it is hard to imagine that the #2 was not better. Legursky made the 53 last year because of Stapleton's injury. They didn't want the rookie Shipley backing him up and Legursky can play G which comes in handy on game day active players. I'm not sure how they feel. They were trying to get a C last year and wanted to trade up for Unger in the 2nd.

Didn't Legursky start for Kemo when he was hurt? Or was that just Foster?
He got the start in the pre-season O...Wasn't it?
