Steelers sign WR Battle, Limas Sweed on the way out?

Steelers continue special teams spree with Battle

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 8, 2010

The Steelers wisely understand their pass-first tendencies didn't keep them out of the playoffs. Their abysmal special teams were largely to blame.

Arnaz Battle agreed to terms on a three-year contract Monday, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee. Safety Will Allen, also a core special teams player, was signed earlier in the day.

Battle played under new Pittsburgh special teams coach Al Everest in San Francisco. He's an aggressive blocking wideout that can fill Pittsburgh's fourth receiver role.

Limas Sweed's future with the team is very much in doubt after his mysterious disappearance late last season.

Sean McDonald was signed last year too and he didn't make it through the season. Battle is nothing but an insurance policy in case Sweed or a new rookie can't step in.

        Like the signing, a lot.

Battle is a tough reciever, willing to block & take a hit- perfect for Steeler football.

Not sure where this puts Sweed- Training Camp battle with Tyler Grisham & perhaps a rookie?

Battle would only be an asset if Arian's decides to install a triple-option attack next season.
Obviously the standard is the standard.

will never happen, Arians much prefers empty backfield sets...

Battle could still run his signature QB draw out of an empty set.

Looks like a Steeler to me. I haven't seen much of him prior to watching some of his highlights today. I like what I've seen thus far.

59 catches and 0 drops in 2006. Must have some good hands.

Steelers bring back Randle El, Ryan Clark

Posted by Mike Dunbar on March 8, 2010

On the same day that the Steelers signed receiver Randle El and safety Will Allen, they've brought back two guys who by all appearances would never again wear the black helmet with the logo on only one side.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that receiver Antwaan Randle El has agreed to a three-year contract with the Steelers; Aaron Wilson has posted on Twitter than Ryan Clark has agreed to terms with the Steelers after the door on his career there presumably had been closed.

Clark told Josina Anderson of FOX 31 in Denver that it's a four-year deal. "My plan was to retire a Steeler," he said. "It took a little longer than I wanted to get this deal done."

The developments are bad news for receiver Limas Sweed and free-agent safety Tyrone Carter. Sweed undoubtedly will be dumped; Carter undoubtedly won't be re-signed.

Clark recently visited Miami, and he was with the Dolphins earlier today, negotiating possible terms.

Chadbrother is a big 49ers fan, so Chadman has watched the odd game or two of the 49ers. Battle is appropriately named as he'll fight for everything.

Good, solid player. If hines were to get hurt, Battle could easily step in as his replacement & give a good showing.

His biggest downfall at San Fran was that he's just not....great. He's solid, but then, until they got Crabtree, their whole WR corp was solid. So no player ever really drew double coverage, no player made the dafety slide over a little more, opening up lanes.

And they haven't had consistant play at QB pretty much the whole time Battle has been there.

                            Good pick up.
