    Nice approach to FA

Steelers: Battle visits Monday; Sweed's status in air
    Sunday, March 07, 2010
    By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Uncertain about the future of Limas Sweed and looking to add depth to the position, the Steelers will entertain their first free agent Monday when San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Arnaz Battle will visit the team's South Side facility.

Battle, 30, has spent seven seasons with the 49ers after being a sixth-round draft pick out of Notre Dame in 2003. He has 178 catches, 2,150 yards and 11 touchdowns in his NFL career. His best season was in 2006 when he had 56 catches, 686 yards and 3 touchdowns.

He had just 29 catches for 358 yards and no touchdowns in 24 games the past two seasons, including five catches for 40 yards in 15 games last season.

Battle (6 feet 1, 208 pounds), who played quarterback at Notre Dame, might also visit with the Seattle Seahawks.

The Steelers will not visit with any free agents before Monday because coach Mike Tomlin and his coaching staff are on a weekend retreat at one of the area mountain resorts.

Battle would provide depth at wide receiver because veteran Joey Galloway, signed late in the season, is an unrestricted free agent who will not be re-signed. Also, it is not known what will happen with Sweed, a second-round draft choice in 2008 who missed the final three games last season because of undisclosed personal issues.

The Steelers finished the regular season with free-agent Tyler Grisham, who spent most of the year on the practice squad, as their fourth wide receiver.

Not really surprising. The team is built through the draft. Not FA. The players we want will be around later. Not the first weekend.

you're right to be ticked off- if the f.o. had been in town this week they probably would have signed julius peppers, nate burleson, chad clifton, antwan randle el and vince wilfolk.

how could they not have known f.a. started this week??

The people that are trying to make the world worse never take a day off, why should I?

      Light up the darkness.

Yeah, sometimes I wonder who is steering the boat. I fear it is often nobody.
Even if Bill Belichick was getting an atomic wedgie, his face would look exactly the same.

nah, they would have signed Foote, Peezy, and El.

Dood, we're getting the band back together.

The Steelers have a plan that doesn't involve overspending on free agents the first weekend. They have lost no one that they really wanted.

They are probably away doing something important like planning for the draft, OTAs and next season.

There are plenty of FO personnel to talk to agents.

Steelers coaching staff spends weekend on retreat

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 7, 2010

Some coaching staffs spent the weekend wining and dining free agents. Or showing up at their houses.

The Steelers coaches hung out together on a "weekend retreat" at a Pittsburgh-area mountain resort.

The team-building exercise makes sense on a few levels. The team takes a measured approach to free agency, so the coaches weren't going to be busy yet anyhow. Plus there are many new members to a Steelers staff which also includes an offensive coordinator that nearly got booted.

Mike Tomlin's crew will be back in town Monday, when they will meet with wide receiver Arnaz Battle.

Or just taking a little breather from that so they can re-energize for the upcoming draft, etc.

It's not like these guys really get vacations or anything. Since the Steelers (smartly) don't throw around big dollars in FA this is the perfect time for them to do this.

You caught that? Just think its funny these guys are so good. While other teams are in panic mode to land the next big FA our staff is off doing their own thing. Then they will come back and find value that 31 other teams skimmed over and left us for a reasonable price.

How long have you been following the Steelers? This is SOP (standard operating procedure) the free agents the Steelers will sign will be the last ones off the board that will fill a need for depth and potentially work their way into the starting lineup if the opportunity arises. The Steelers have operated this way for only a very short period of time, say, 40 years.
