"Ryan Clark is the best FS in the business"

or so says Ryan Clark's agent. i know that's his job, but this attitude will not be conducive to getting a contract done with the Steelers.

    USAToday.com, Steelers Team Report
    2/26/10

With nose tackle Casey Hampton and kicker Jeff Reed in the fold, the Steelers turn their full attention to safety Ryan Clark with the clock counting down until he can become an unrestricted free agent. Clark, 30, has been the team's starting free safety the past four seasons after they signed him as a UFA from the Washington Redskins. The Steelers passed on the opportunity to use either the franchise or transition tag on Clark, using the franchise on Reed and not deploying the transition available to them. Clark would have cost them $6 million to transition and $6,455,000 to franchise and they considered that far too much to pay, especially with strong safety Troy Polamalu the second-highest paid safety in the league at $6,495,000 last season. The two sides are nowhere close to coming to a contract agreement but Reed's agent believes they still can get something done over the next week.

"They've paid plenty of other players a lot more than we're asking for," agent Joel Turner said. "It's not a situation where Ryan is asking for too much money. We're not asking for more than most people would. Keep in mind, Ryan is the best free safety not only in unrestricted free agency but restricted free agency. He's the best free safety in the business."

The Steelers, though, are prepared to replace Clark with Ryan Mundy, who will enter his third season, if they cannot come to terms on a new contract. Mundy, a sixth-round draft choice in 2006, played in a backup role last season after spending part of his rookie year on their practice squad. "They have an opportunity to keep a guy like Ryan the next four or five years and I don't see how they can't," Turner said. "There's not a rookie out there who can come in and be close to him."

      Watchu talkin bout, Willis?

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

When Troy is on the field Ryan Clark is one of the best....

Any guy who can lay out Wes Welker is one of the best IMO LOL!!!... FS's have been trying to get one on him for years.

Why wouldn't his agent say it or think it?

These statements are for the listener (either the Steelers or the fans). An agent isn't doing his job if he doesn't try to sell his client. The Steelers in turn will try to talk down Clark's value. That is how the business works.

I just want the Steelers to draft a safety this year so someone can start to get groomed to play because neither Clark or Troy P are locks to play a full season. In fact, I doubt either player will play the entire year without injury at this point.
The Steelers’ went through seven consecutive drafts (2003-09) without taking an offensive lineman in the first two rounds, the longest such streak by any franchise this century.

Re: "Ryan Clark is the best FS in the business"

I think its one thing to "talk up your client", its another to be just flat out ridiculous. He is not one of the best FS in the game. He is average.

Shall we watch play-by-play on all the 4th quarter comebacks in which the Steelers loss? How about Oaklend? Miami's comback? I'm sure we all can watch a lot of tape and prove otherwise to his agent. I'm not saying all our secondary struggles were due to him because they weren't .... William Gay absolutely sucks in a starting role.

However, Clark REALLY struggled without Polamalu. I'm a huge fan of Polamalu just as much as the next Steeler fan but I didn't think our secondary would collapse without him...The Steelers secondary was flat out pitiful without him.

I know it would be a bit risky, but if this is a sign of things to come regarding the resigning of Clark, I would take a serious look at both Earl Thomas and Taylor Mays. Then, let Mundy and one of those two fight it out. IMO, I think it may come down to this anyway.

I think Hope was just as good if not better than Clark and they didn't sign him. If Clark and his agent are looking for big money, he'll be the next one to go.

When Troy is on the field, Tyrone Carter is one of the best FS in the game (see Denver game).

No, but there is a 3rd yr player named Mundy that could do quite nicely in that role, thank you very much.

Eric Berry, even as a rookie, will be a better FS than Ryan Clark. Not that it makes much a difference, since we'd have no shot at drafting him anyway, but I'm just saying. If Berry surprisingly fell down into the latter portions of the top 10, though, I'd trade our top two picks, #18 and #52, to get him.

I think this post is on the money $$$. If any other team wants to give Ryan Clark Chris Hope type money then they can go ahead and have him and find out for themselves that Ryan Clark is average at best without Troy Polamalu next to him.

And let's remember, that Hope was a younger player with some upside and the Steelers STILL let him walk. Hope is still younger than the 30 y/o Clark and puts up similar numbers. No way do I think that Clark even gets Hope type of money... and he shouldn't, especially given his age and productivity.

Well, the game tape and Clark's agent seem to be at odds with each other. I can go for maybe Clark being the hardest hitting FS in the game.
