Any details for those of us out of towners?

This is all that's out there so far. I hope it's true!

A source says nose tackle Casey Hampton has agreed to a three year, $21 million contract to stay with the team – with $11 million of the contract guaranteed.

Today is the deadline for the Steelers to use either of their franchise or transition tags.

I love the fact it is 3 years. That is a fair deal for all concerned plus as an added benefit we can ignore Tereence Cody at the Combine. Now we can grab someone in Round 2 or 3 like Cam Thomas or Torrell Troup and develop them and add depth.

I wonder if they tag Ryan Clark now since they will have a tag available?

Sirius reported early this morning they were close. Great news if they got a long term deal done. I will have to update my mock when it becomes official. Meaning....

7 mil per? Can't say I love that amount. But, it certainly helps our team for next season.
Even if Bill Belichick was getting an atomic wedgie, his face would look exactly the same.

I would of preferred they just franchise him for this season, and pay him for this season.

I really don't have a problem with that number. First reports were that it was front loaded. 7 mil might be an average. Looking at what they pay for Keisel, Kirschke, & Hoke and what Hampton brings...It is a fair deal. OL & DL are the two spots where age doesn't show up so soon. Loosing a step doesn't have that much of an impact in those positions. Strength doesn't fall off & football smarts, technique, & experience can make up for the lost step. I have confidence that Hampton could give 3 more years of high production. He needs to watch his weight to aid him in staying healthy.

This would have been my preference as well. If there is a work stoppage in 2011 and the Steelers aren't paying him by the time football is played again Hampton will be done (or, at lease much less effective) and the Steelers will have spent 4 million dollars on him that they didn't have to (the difference between his 11 million guaranteed and 7 million franchise tag).

Re: Hampton agrees to stay with Steelers

The Harrison & Farrior deals looked more like a "Thank You" contract. They were very uncharacteristic of the Steeler usual stance on older players. The Farrior deal looks like it was a mistake but Harrison is going strong. I think this had a little of that but more to the effect of keeping the window open. The labor dispute might put a damper on the plans but this team has another SB appearance in them with this core group on D over the next 1-2 years. Instead of creating another hole to fill through the draft, they eliminated a hole and could address their other weaknesses. Personally, I feel more confident in a SB with Hampton, Hoke, & a 2nd or 3rd rounder on this roster than I do with Hoke, a vet FA, and a 1st rounder. That "1st rounder" could be addressed now in 2011-2012 if needed.

The carrot on the end of the string is now gone so he will be comfortable and show up to camp fat as hell. Amazing he came into camp ready to roll this year, facing his contract year. Where is the incentive now?

On the same day that the Steelers faced a deadline for deciding whether to use the franchise tag on veteran nose tackle Casey Hampton, the two sides have finalized a new deal.

According to KDKA-TV, the Steelers have reached an agreement with Hampton. It's expected to be announced later today.

                        It's a three-year, $21 million contract, with $11 million guaranteed.

The 325-pounder (when weighed with one foot on the ground) joined the Steelers in 2001 as a first-round draft pick, and he has been a key member of the team's 3-4 defense, which requires the presence of a large, athletic man who can tie up blockers in the middle of the line.

If the Steelers had used the franchise tag on Hampton, he would have been entitled to a one-year, $7 million contract.

The $7 million average over three years falls far short of the high end of the market for defensive lineman, which currently is in the range of $12 million annually

Nasty, I'm a little hesitant with Spoon since I haven't read where anyone is saying he will be able to play ILB. He's probably big enough, but where's the press on him playing ILB? I've read where some think he has more upside than McClain, which is saying something...

The contracts are "black & white". I'm sure these were issues the Steelers protected themselves on. These guys have been doing this for a long time and they will ensure he will have to earn his guranteed money. Meaning....Showing up overweight....VOID! Dynamics...

He made 6.5 last year and went to the probowl yet again. He got a 500k pay increase and he will be here for 3 years. I don't have a problem with it.
