Exclusive or Non-Exclusive???

    http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10055/1038123-66.stm

Hampton will be in the final year of a five-year, $22.75 million contract he signed in 2005. The Steelers could elect to put the exclusive franchise tag on him, which would prohibit him from negotiating with other teams. Or they could deem him a non-exclusive franchise player, which means he could negotiate with other teams and the Steelers would receive two first-round picks in return if he signed elsewhere and they did not match the offer.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

Any minute now the Steelers are going to slap the franchise tag on Casey Hampton. If you were the GM would you slap him with the Exclusive Tag or the Non-Exclusive Tag? Let's here why too? So Slap away....

Non exclusive. Two additional #1 picks would give us the ability to do alot of maneuvering in the draft to fill lots of needs.

Non-Exclusive....Let him fish if he wants. Hopefully, he accidentally hooks a whale and it pulls him under!

I doubt anyone is dumb enough to sign him to an offer sheet to add to the Steelers dynasty. I would like him to stay but for (2) 1sts...I will pack his "snacks" for him! The clock is ticking in Hampton's ear...Not the Steelers.

        Re: Exclusive or Non-Exclusive???

The exclusive franchise tag is rarely ever given. The only recent example I can think of is Nnamdi Asomugha. The non-exclusive tag has gone to pretty much everyone else who is franchised. That's what Hampton will get. It doesn't mattter, anyway, because you'd have to be certifiably insane to surrender 2 first round picks for some of Hampton's age and condition. I can only think of 2 instances in which a team ever gave up the two first rounders for a franchise player (Sean Gilbert from Washington to Carolina and Joey Galloway from Seattle to Dallas), and neither case turned out particularly well, so G.M.'s are smarter than that now.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Non-exclusive for sure. There may not be football in 2011, so, the Steelers shouldn't even look to sign him long term, IMO. If he plays next year and the 2011 season is wiped out by the time they play football again he will be 34 or 35 years old.

If someone is willing to take him for two firsts and give him a long term contract that he will never see the end of that's fine with me. The Steelers should be drafting his replacement this year at some point in the draft.

I'm in the camp of non-exclusive. I love Hampton, but for two first rounders, buh-bye! Hoke and a rookie can man the position for the year. Not only would it give the Steelers flexibility and 3 almost sure-fire starters for the next 5-6 years, it would also present a cost savings.

Or desperate. A team like San Diego who is in desperate need of a 3-4 NT and thinks they are close to winning a championship may be inclined to do so. They are catching a ton of heat for letting L.T. go and Darren Sproles is going to be allowed to walk as well.

First round picks arent guaranteed...Casey Hampton anchoring a 3-4 defense is.

If they were that desperate that they would be willing to give up two first round picks for a franchised NT (and I doubt that they would be that desperate), then you'd think they would go after Wilfork instead, who is 4 years younger than Hampton.

But if they were willing, I would happily accept 2 first rounders from San Diego, even if they were late first round picks. Imagine being able to draft Dan Williams with our first round pick, then Odrick with their first round pick, and then a safety and a corner in rounds 2 & 3. Then next year, you could add linebacker depth (someone like Chris Galippo inside or Von Miller outside) as well as a center of the future (either Kris O'Dowd or Stefan Wisniewski) with the two late first round picks in the 2011 draft.

Heck, I would trade him for a second rounder at this point. I doubt very much any team would even give that up though.

With a possible lockout next year Snack is virtually useless past a 1-year contract. I wouldn't even attempt to sign him long term.

I can't decide whether I'd rather see Dan Williams or Earl Thomas as a Steeler next year. I'm leaning towards Williams and Clark signing for a couple more years as the best option.

Man, this possible lockout year has got to be driving front offices crazy trying to figure how it all affects their personnel decisions.
