    Eagles Release Westbrook

    I'm a bit shocked.

First LT. Now Westbrook. Could this be the versatile RB we've been waiting for?
Oh, wait, Ben totally underutilizes his RBs in the passing game anyway. .

It has been a while since a former Eagle RB was spotted on the Steeler sideline wearing sweatpants game after game.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Heh Heh! I remember Staley. When we first got him I was all jazzed. Then came game time!

Eh, Staley played pretty well when healthy. It's the latter part of that statement which is a bit troublesome.

Staley was a stud for us before Bruschi punched his hamstring and basically ended his career. I loved him as a Steeler. Only thing I don't get is why he stayed on as long as he did without contributing?

And yes, the latter part is troublesome

Westbrook is a great player who is ALWAYS injured. No thanks.

With Westbrook out at the Eagles, who is chadman going to lean on to defend his FF crown in 2010?

              Shady McCoy?

I picked up Westbrook for a midround dynasty draft choice in the offspring. Oops. Didn't cost me much, but it will yield me less.

I'd like him here frankly. Can he contribute more than Moore? I'm not sure, but he's a higher end player when healthy. Plus, he maybe has a few tricks to teach Mendi. Mendi hasn't had much of a veteran influence at his position. Parker and Moore and that's about it. Bettis was gone before he got here.

I thought Staley played all right. By some standards I'm sure he played "well," but he didn't live up to my expectations. It's a bit like Reggie Bush. He plays well, just not up to the billing of a #1 pick.

Ok, I feel a bit sheepish. In 04 Staley averaged 4.3 YPC over 10 games started, which is pretty good. Bettis averaged 3.8 YPC that same year. Bettis did have 13 TDs to Staley's 1, but that probably had to do with Bettis having a bit more power in goal-line situations and getting the call. Staley did have 3 fumbles though, 2 of them lost. Both of them only had 6 catches though.

Staley was a beast when he was healthy. That is the problem though. he only play in 8 games that year or so number like that. Off the top of my head I think he had 707 yards in 7 games and then pulled his hammy. He also had two fumbles in back to back possessions at one game I actually attended. Other than that though he was good.

Westbrook was "surprised" that he didn't get a chance to redo his deal

Posted by Mike Florio on February 25, 2010 8:48 PM ET

Though running back Brian Westbrook says he has no animosity toward the Eagles, he told Dan Patrick earlier today that he thought he'd have a chance to take less money in order to stay in Philly.

"I was a little bit surprised, thinking they maybe would give me an opportunity to renegotiate things," Westbrook said. "For [the Eagles], it's always business, it's always money."

It wouldn't have been unprecedented for an aging back to take a backseat and a haircut. Several years ago, Jerome Bettis dramatically cut his pay over multiple years in order to stay in Pittsburgh in a reduced role. It paid off with a Super Bowl win in his final NFL game.

As we hear it, however, there are real questions regarding the condition of Westbrook's knee. Though he possibly could play again, the Eagles aren't sure that he could make it through a full season. (Then again, he never has.)

Besides, the repeated concussions creates a very real stigma. All things equal, the Eagles are better off having a guy on the depth chart who has not become a poster child for a cause in which the league is now acutely interested.

So it doesn't surprise us that the Eagles wanted to move on, and it won't surprise us if he's on no active roster when the final cuts are made in September.
