Plaxico Burress may now lose his home too

boy, talk about someone's life going downhill quickly...

Plaxico Burress, Wife Sued For $3.3 Million In South Florida Foreclosure Case

Former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress(notes) may not have a home to return to in Florida, once he emerges from prison.

The jailed Super Bowl hero and his wife, Tiffany, were hit with a $3.3 million foreclosure lawsuit on Jan. 22 from Deutsche Bank National Trust Co., as a trustee for a mortgage-backed securities fund, according to Broward County Circuit Court records.

It concerns the $2.9 million mortgage Burress signed in 2005, covering his home in Lighthouse Point, just north of Fort Lauderdale.

He bought the 6,872-square-foot waterfront home, at 2249 N.E. 26th St., for $4 million in 2005. Two years later, he moved his official residence from New Jersey to Florida.

Burress caught the winning touchdown pass in the final minute of Super Bowl XLII to lead the Giants past the previously unbeaten New England Patriots. New York rewarded him in 2008 with a two-year contract extension at $7 million a year.

All of that unraveled in November 2008, when Burress entered the Latin Quarter nightclub in Manhattan with a gun tucked in his pants. The unlicensed gun slid down his leg and blasted a bullet in his thigh. The Giants released him after the season.

In August 2009, New York authorities charged Burress with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of reckless endangerment. He signed a plea deal to a lesser firearms charge and was sentenced to two years in prison.

In media interviews since his imprisonment, Burress said he would like to return to the NFL once he is out of prison sometime in 2011. It is not clear if that would be soon enough to save his home.

Sad. Which of us wouldn't have died to have the chance he had. It's just sad.

While this is certainly sad - what the @#$% did he do with all his money? When he signed with the Giants back in '05 he got a guranteed 8.25 million. He was scheduled to earn over $11 million in the first two season and $14.6 in the first three years.

It's easy to go broke when you spend like you will be employed for 20 years and you only work for 7. It happens a lot... poor guy gets rich, buys big house, bunch of cars and needless jewelry.. add women into the mix and it's a wrap.

I was raised to believe jewelry was for women not men. Pinky rings, earrings and chains are tacky and feminine IMHO.

As far as it being sad.. it really is. These guys come from nothing most of the time and a few have issues they carry with them and can't seem to shake. Just because a guy is a good football player or athlete it doesn't mean they are good at life in general.

Look at Big Ben.. dude has had more then a few gaffes, it comes so quick for most that they lose site of reality or what is in the best interest of their livelihood. Tiger Woods committed his life to playing golf.. but committing to a wife? Not so good.

We always wonder how people with money and fame blow it but most of these guys have a bunch of pain and skeletons that go with it...

The Tyson documentary was sad, funny and tragic... it just shows how an athlete can have it all and not know a damn thing when it comes to finances and common sense. While you are training to be the best their are sharks out their training to take your money. Unfortunately sometimes its the friends and close people who are out to get you.

I doubt Plax or any athlete plans on blowing their fortune or sits back and thinks of different ways to phuck up a good thing. They think what they are doing is normal.

Look how much his house cost... 4 mill.. it has to be furnished too..

take that 15 mill... agent gets 10%.. Lawyer gets a cut... then taxes slash it in half...
add a few babies or the wifey expenses and the trial lawyers and you have a problem.

It's no different then a guy who gets a promotion and buys a nicer house for 350K... but then he gets fired or sued...

It's just on a bigger scale with athletes.

Re: Plaxico Burress may now lose his home too

A while back in ESPN the magazine, there was a pretty good article from Player X (a current NFL player who writes anonymously) discussing athletes and their money. In addition to agents, taxes (and, in this climate, potentially bad investments), there is also the pressure to spend money for appearance sake. Keeping up with the Joneses in this case means keeping up with guys who make a lot of money and live an ostentatious lifestyle.

It really is sad that Plexico made some of the unfortunate decisions that he made. It is especially sad that he went to a bar where he felt that he needed a gun. I actually saw Trevor Laws, the Eagles DT, at the bar on Friday, and it certainly wasn't the type of place where he needed a gun. He still seemed to be enjoying himself.

Nicely said...and I agree. Poor kid, dysfunctional upbringing making big bucks in the NFL=recipe for disaster. Not to mention they have no concept of asset management.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

I wouldn't (not willingly, anyway). Because if I was dead, what would be the point?
In response to his pleas, an officer said: "You think we've never arrested somebody that's made national media? ... We deal with the Bengals all the time."

I used to go to a place in Old City.. A restuarant that was 2 stories high, glass front and pretty high end. It was on 4th and the main street. McNabb and all the players would go there and there was no need for heat.

I actually knew a few West Philly cats who wouldn't go there because they couldn't carry and didn't feel safe. How the effe does a place where you don't need a gun feel unsafe?

This is the back azzward thinking I'm talking about. There are guys who think like this who make millions. Why was Bam Morris in Beaver County moving weight? It's like money isn't enough, some of these guys want more...

People (us) not in their position really don't understand the life dynamics they go through. I think there's a saying about someone else's shoes.

Things come easy to alot of these guys, so they don't backfill their lives with knowledge and understanding of how the world works. The Mike Tyson dilemma if you will. Its not Mike Tyson's fault that he didn't know what they hell was going on around him. He had no chance frankly to stay successful without someone else truly doing it FOR him. To be honest, I think Mike has done well to actually be leading a somewhat productive life. Someone got ahold of him and backed him up a bit or the destruction moments were coming. And no I'm not saying Mike is a model for anyone else and I haven't even thought about him for ages. But he quite frankly should be dead or in jail right now. That spiral he was on was a big one.

This might sound over-simplified...but why don't these guys go to folks in their profession who have been successful managing their money and ask them for advice?

Why didn't Ben listen to Bradshaw when he said to put the bike away because he was too valuable to the franchise? You know why? Cause you can't tell a 23 year old anything about the ways of the world.

The smart ones will take classes or go to conferences that the NFL sets up.

You can't tell Plax what to do on the field half the time this is why his life crumbled. How do you go from toast of the town to jail in 2 seasons? I watched him tell Tom Coughlin to Shut the F#%# UP and treated him like he was the waterboy.

If he was a decent human being I'm willing to bet my last dollar they cover for him. The hospital nurse tried but I think the Giants and the city were tired of his b!tching and went hard after him. NYC protects their own but Plax is so full of hate and anger he burned every bridge he crossed.

Because those guys are old fuddy duddies and they don't get what the new guys have to suffer through.

I wonder what percentage of people even on this board listened to their own fathers telling them about the world. How many of us studied as hard as we could and got good grades, then jobs, then a wife that didn't turn out to be a beotch. There was more advice to be taken than many of us did. I did pretty well in at least hearing him and filing it away. But I certainly left alot on the table. And I didn't have the luxury of having thousands of women throwing themselves at me and my piles of money to distort reality.
