Scottie Montgomery is Steelers new WRs coach

    Montgomery to coach WRs
    2-16-2010

PITTSBURGH ? The Steelers filled the lone remaining vacancy on their coaching staff today when they hired Scottie Montgomery as wide receivers coach. Montgomery joins the Steelers after coaching wide receivers at his alma mater Duke from 2006-09.

Montgomery, 31, played wide receiver in the NFL with the Denver Broncos (2000-02) after originally signing with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted rookie in 2000. He enjoyed a college career at Duke where he finished among the school’s all-time leading receivers.

Under Montgomery’s tutelage, Duke had three receivers with more than 50 receptions and 600 receiving yards in 2009. Duke’s passing attack gained 3,660 yards (305.0 avg.) and accounted for 24 touchdowns last season.

A native of Cleveland County, North Carolina, Montgomery is one of just five two-time MVPs in Duke history. He currently ranks second on the Blue Devils’ all-time list in career receptions (171), fourth in receiving yards (2,379), and is one of only three players to lead the program in receiving in three straight seasons (1997-99). Montgomery is one of only two Duke receivers to post three straight seasons with at least 50 receptions and 600 receiving yards.

good to know he was a decent receiver at DUKE, but it would be nicer to know if he's any good as a coach.

Is that asking too much of the official team website? Probably.

Are you trying to bring "rational thinking" to a fan-based message board?...

... Being that it is steelers.com, it is gonna be as "vanilla" as possible. Especially during the off-season... But as for Montgomery's coaching career, they listed it... He was at Duke, then to the Steelers.

Sounds like an up and coming young coach. If he went to Duke, you'd have to assume that he is a pretty bright guy.

With Hines, Holmes and Wallace, he has a lot to work with. It will be really interesting to see if he can work with Sweed and help him fulfill his potential.

I would figure that Hines can offer quite a bit of info.

Re: Scottie Montgomery is Steelers new WRs coach

It is interesting that Hines Ward is now 2 years older than his new WR coach. Then again, when Mike Tomlin first came to Tampa as a DB coach, John Lynch was a year older than Tomlin. One benefit is that the former WR coach (Randy Fichtner) is still on the staff as QB coach, so he should be a good resource for the wideouts as Montgomery adapts to the pro game.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.
