Meet Micah Johnson

Living in Kentucky...I get to study some of the local talent. If there is an ILB in the draft that is the eptiome of Steeler it's Johnson. UK really out recruited itself when they landed Johnson a few years back. At 6 foot 2 258 pounds he is a physical specimen. He is likely the strongest guy on the UK squad. His ability to read and react is 1-2 round grade. He hits with force...he punishes those he tackles. He doesn't take plays off...and runs with a high motor. He can make his way through traffic with terrific vision or go through a lineman with elite strength. He is the epitome of a Mack ILB made in the mold of Levon Kirkland. He is a stout run defender.

Weakness...he isn't fast 4.7 40 time will keep him out of the first two rounds and possibly the 3rd. But, he plays faster than he clocks and is always around the ball. He is a sub par cover Lb but how much cover does the mack need to be able to play? He is a touch inconsistent but should improve with improved coaching.

I really like this guy and think he would provide tremendous depth at the mack. This guy's draft status will really be hurt by the fact that he really is niched into the 3-4 mack position.

He would be a steal in the 4th.

2010 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Micah Johnson

Micah Johnson
6-2/254
Inside Linebacker
Kentucky

Micah Johnson Scouting Report
By Matt McGuire

Strengths:
Good height for position
Thick, cut, muscular frame
Highly athletic
Explosive
Good agility and can change directions quickly
Shows coordination and flexibility
Very strong and powerful
Sideline-to-sideline ability
Always around the football
Active
Fluid hips and can cover tight ends
Displays great range in zone
A productive playmaker
Tough
Versatile; any scheme player
Improved his ability when taking angles to the football
Stack-and-shed linebacker
Poised and under control
High upside
Nice overall skill set

Weaknesses:
Might lack some instincts
Talent hasn't always shown through on field
Doesn't have great timed speed
A little inconsistent
Could be a more effective blitzer
Needs to improve reaction skills
Minor durability concerns

Summary: Johnson is a linebacker with a very high upside, but hasn't caught the full attention of NFL scouts quite yet. If he can stay healthy next season, I think he is going to move up draft boards because of his impressive skill set and high upside.

Player Comparison: Jon Beason. Their body frames, physical approach to the game and range are very similar.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

You know if he's fully healed?

If he is I can see him sneaking into the 2nd or 3rd round. If not I can see him dropping to the 5th ala Jasper Brinkley...

Absolute beast. I get flashbacks of Kirkland when talking about Johnson.

Here in Cincitucky too. I love Johnson's effort and hitting. But, he has very average lateral agility imho. I've seen him play about 4 times and he often has trouble redirecting once he gets that big body going one way. Fast RBs get around the edge before he can get there (even when unimpeded). I'm not convinced he'll be a great pro. He may remind you of Kirkland, but Kirkland ran slid very well (esp. early in his career). I think he is legitimately a 4th or 5th round talent. He'll probably be drafted in the late 3rd or early 4th, but I think he'll be limited in the pass happy NFL.
Even if Bill Belichick was getting an atomic wedgie, his face would look exactly the same.

My guess is only the combine will tell. I'm actually hoping he lays an egg at the combines. The guy is a gamer but I wouldn't spend more than a 4th on him because he would merely be a back up mack for 2-3 years.

I agree and don't completely agree with the profile that RB pulled up. He doesn't have the speed to hang with the faster TEs, RBs and slots of the NFL. He is really a niche player. If put into the right scheme...mack...3-4 he will thrive and turn heads. If not...he will likely find himself riding the pine for most of his career. Tremendous value for a 3-4 team in the 4th round.

Shawn, I've watched Johnson in several games and came away much more impressed with him than I was with Cody. With his injury we may very well be able to pick him up in Rd. 4. It was very unfortunate for that to happen to him at the end of the game. I tend to agree with 'Blood about his lateral agility, we may give up something there, but his heart and motor appear to be top notch.

But of course, being a PSU homer, I'd love to see us get Sean Lee in Rd. 3 or 4. I think pretty much the same thing could be said of Lee as Johnson except Johnson has about 20 lbs. more muscle than Lee.

OK, now you have made me more than angry, I am Angerer! Do you really think Pat is a better prospect than Sean Lee? Really? I've never seen Pat play, so tell me why. I've read the prospect ratings on nfldraftscout and other sites, (though I think draftscout is the best site) and I've not seen one that has Pat rated higher. Lee is 4 (Rd. 3 projected) and Pat is 9 (Rd. 6 projected) on draftscout

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/TSX/2010_ILB

Plus Pat played 13 games in 2009 and only had 14.5 tackles. That is not very good...
