    That a boy Shawn...

...are you telling me that if Joe Haden fell as Todd Mcshay has in his latest mock draft to 13 you would be oppossed to trading up a mere 5 slots to get the best CB in this entire draft? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm???? Interesting.

Better question is if Haden falls you have to ask yourself why in a league desperate for CBs? I'm telling you guys Haden is no Ron Woodson. He is the best CB in a class with no elite CB. It's like being the best player on the St Louis Rams...its all relative.

That is why you don't panic and draft for a position and take the best player on your board.

Yeah, there will never be another Ron Woodson, but how does he stack up to Rod Woodson?
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

I think Thomas will be equally good at the next level. While I see DB as a more important position than FS I'm not willing to give up picks to grab Haden...certainly not this season where the draft is heavy in rounds 2-4 in our positions of need. Lets not forget we have two young DBs who have yet to see alot of. Not to mention I highly doubt Haden drops to 13.
I too am a big Earl Thomas fan but one thing that really concerns me is that he is undersized. He is a very physcial player who at the next level may break down.

The one safety I would keep an eye on that may surprize everyone and end up being the best of them all is Chad Jones of LSU. He could be had in the second and maybe third round.[/quote:21tw2n24]

I keep telling myself to not worry about Thomas' size, 5'9.5" and 197, but it is a legitimate concern.

Jones is a SS, and is the same size as Mays. Could he play FS? What would we do with Jones if we draft him? Jones is certainly a very talented athlete having played professional baseball and soon the NFL. He can also return punts:

I believe Thomas is projected to play FS at the next level with the ability to play SS and DB and return kicks. Thats alot of value I don't see the Steelers passing up.

Jones played free safety last year at LSU. And he actually did everything that most thought they would see from Taylor Mays. He is a play maker who has ball skills.

Well, LSU sports should know I guess. Playing FS is even better for us. NFLdraftscout has Jones rated as the No. 1 SS:

Todd McShay is a moron and his mock will be completely off basis come april.
Agreed. As part of the NFL Draft coverage this year, they should put McShay and Kiper in the octagon and let them bitch-slap the hell out of each other.

Like I said about Mays, Jones is probably better suited to play SS however he has shown he is no slouch at the free safety spot.

Trade up or trade down. I don't really like the spot where we pick.

I think we can get the same quality player much later in the first round and pick up some extra picks.

If we trade up, I think it should be for Berry or McClain.

If we trade down there's lots of options. I'd take a serious look at Gresham and based on many mocks, I'd say we could trade down and snag him.

We don't have a #1 WR or a Gonzo/Gates like TE and Ward is getting older by the day. If you don't like Gresham, we could use some of the picks we get for trading down to try and trade for Brandon Marshall from the Broncos.

I think a stud TE would help the running game the most and it would help us score inside the 20. If we're going to rely on Ben to win for us, he deserves the best weapons.

I like the idea of trading up for Berry (if he doesn't get taken 3rd overall, of course, which I think may happen). But I don't like the idea of taking (or trading for) offensive skill players, even if we trade down. We need help on all 3 levels of our defense, plus we could bolster our o-line. We have plenty of talent at the offensive skill positions. That is the least of our worries.

Hines Ward had 95 catches for 1167 yards (12.3 avg) and 6 TD's
Santonio Holmes had 79 catches for 1248 yards (18.8 avg) and 5 TD's
Heath Miller had 76 catches for 789 yards (10.4 avg) and 6 TD's
Mike Wallace had 39 catches for 756 yards (19.4 avg) and 6 TD's

No need to spend a first round pick on another WR or TE, or to trade for Brandon Marshall.

Ben has as many weapons or more than any other quarterback in the league. If he can't make do with Holmes, Ward, Wallace, (4th whoever, I'll say Sweed for now), Miller, Mendenhall and Moore then there isn't any amount of help we can give him offensively.

The Steelers need youth and/or upgrades at defensive line, linebacker and secondary. They would be wasting early picks on offensive skill positions. Miller is good enough to block in short yardage situations and goal to go situations. They simply need to be more dedicated to running the ball in general and the short yardage and goal line will take care of itself.

We have enough offensive weapons...if Ben can't get it done with what we have then I don't know what to say. We have ignored our DL long enough...that and the secondary have to be first priority. I love the idea of trading down and grabbing Odrick.

                              Yeah, our offense is perfect:

                              #12 in scoring
                              #17 in 3rd down conversions
                              #21 in redzone efficiency
#1 in getting our QB sacked

If we score a couple of TDs instead of FGs, we'd have made the playoffs and won #7.

The defense played without our best 2 players. There's a good reason that they struggled. If we get a healthy Smith and Polamalu back, the defense is in business next year.

But where is the offense if we don't improve it.

I blame the offense for missing the postseason.

And if you want to be able to run the ball better, you need a TE that can control the middle of the field and take an extra LB/Safety out of the box or a #1 WR that demands teams take a Safety out of the box.

Look at what the Browns and Bengals did to us defensively. They covered us with single coverage and no one could get open. Ward/Holmes are not elite WRs. Jury is still out on Wallace who could be something special. And Heath is a well rounded TE, but not elite at getting off the LOS quickly.

I like our offensive players, don't get me wrong. But they are not elite game changing players that defenses must game plan around.

You've gotta game plan around guys like Gates, Gonzales, Fitzgerald, Johnson, etc. And we could use one of those guys. One of those guys would make everyone else better.

Think about the 2nd Cincy game where Ben was looking for Wallace downfield knowing he was the only one with a chance at getting open.

Or the 2nd Cleveland game when no one could get open.

And remember there are WRs and TEs that no team can cover even with 2-3 guys.

Larry Fitzgerald and Andre Johnson were both 3rd overall picks in their respective drafts. There is no one close to their talent level in this draft. I love both of those guys immensely (and would take either one in a second...they are legit elite, no question), but our two Super Bowl MVP's are not slouches.

Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates are rare athletes that were able to translate their unique athleticism on the college basketball court onto the NFL gridiron. Teams have tried to do convert other power forwards into tight ends, but apparently it only works with a select few. Heath's numbers are increasing as he is finally used more in this offense (going from a guy who caught 30- or 40-something passes to someone who is able to catch 70-something passes.

I think if you want to improve the offense, add some elite talent up front. Our o-line has been serviceable, but we don't have a Wesbter, a Kolb, a Dawson, a Faneca, a Hartings, etc. I think adding studs up front will allow our skill players on offense to showcase their talents even more.
