Steelers likely to sign receiver Galloway
    Tuesday, December 22, 2009
    By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The Steelers have brought in veteran wide receiver Joey Galloway and will likely sign him to their 53-man roster today as a replacement for Limas Sweed.

Galloway, 38, was at the Steelers offices this morning because Sweed, a No. 3 draft choice in 2008, has been placed on the reserve/non-football illness list, meaning he cannot play the rest of the season.

This isn't the first time the Steelers considered signing Galloway, the No. 1 draft choice of the Seattle Seahawks in 1995.

They brought him in during the offseason when they were looking for a veteran receiver to add to their roster. Galloway played two games this season with the New England Patriots, catching seven passes for 67 yards, before he was released on Oct. 20.

This is surprising. Galloway seemed to have a hard time adjusting with Brady in NE. I would have thought that bringing McDonald back would make more sense, but apparently I was wrong.

Guess McDonald didn't do it for Tomlin. So if Galloway is playing at 38 Hines has 5 more years in him.

Don't know what to think here. Could be great or could be a bust. It would be very ironic if we get in as a 6-seed and Galloway plays a big role in beating NE as the 3-seed.

Galloway hasn't taken near the physical pounding that Hines has though.

I'm really confused about this move. Don't know why we would bring in a player who doesn't know the playbook as opposed to one who has been with the team for half the season. Guess we won't be seeing any 4 receiver sets this weekend. Hopefully Hines can play.

Heath is the 4th receiver plus we have Logan who I am sure knows some plays. Spaeth could also fill in if needed.

Gopod point on Logan. We did see him take a WR screen on Sunday. Maybe they work him in more plus maybe we saw a preview of Mendy becoming a big part of the passing game this past Sunday.

Just don't see what Galloway can contribute though if Hines' hammy blows out which it sounds like it is close to doing. McDonald was a good possession receiver who would seem ideal to step in for Hines. We are going to have to beat the Ravens through the air. That is their vulnerability and ben will have to have another day like last Sunday to beat them.

Two examples, Michael Crabtree and Braylan Edwards.

Not sure if Crabtree was looking at the playbook while he was holding out, but I know Edwards came in very green and contributed immediately. Being the seasoned vet that Galloway is, he can probably pick up the routes easily. Timing and conditioning should be his only road blocks.

                            I think it's a good move.
