Re: Tomlin PC -- reading between the lines, BA is staying put
Hmm...maybe Chadman has a slightly different read on these topics.
In regards to Tomlin's response to why they decided to throw on 3rd down- he specifically quotes stats saying the Steelers can't convert 3rd & short effeciently with the run. More than a blight on Arians & his play calling, he singles out Rashard Mendenhall & says "It's not good enough". To Chadman, this says this- Tomlin doesn't trust Mendenhall to be a short yardage pounder, and because they don't have another back that can do it effectively (Parker & Moore don't get inserted here, so chances are the Steelers don't think either would do a better job than Mendenhall) the Steelers feel they have a better chance through the air. The up-shot of this- look for Parker & even Moore to be released/un-signed in the off-season & a short yardage pounder added for this specific role.
As for the Joe Burnett quote- firstly Tomlin doesn't single Burnett out, he was asked a specific question regarding Burnett. So he's not calling him out like he did with Mendenhall. Secondly, Tomlin's response that he's looking for a CB to make a play in order to justify said CB staying in the game doesn't mean that the CB needs an INT. It simply means, as far as Chadman can see, that Toomlin has had enough of CB's not making ANY plays, and is throwing out the challenge for 1 or 2 of the current CB's to step up if they want game time. Do you know which Steeler DB has the most pass break-ups this year? Troy Polamalu- yep, half a season Troy has more pass defenses than any other DB for the Steelers with a whopping 10! The Steelers starting CB's have less pass break-ups than some DE's in the NFL this year- look up the stats on NFL.com. Chances are, Tomlin is as tired of the ineffective play at CB as we are.
Tomlin also questions the effort put in by the players- "When you’re making mental mistakes, I put that in the category of effort, really, because it’s discipline". That right there is a death knell for the players Tomlin has in mind. Seriously, Tomlin can't keep players he feels are not putting in. Look for some roster changes this off-season....and to be honest, Chadman is good with that. Change can be good, so long as the important pieces are kept in place.
"Rashard (Mendenhall) has played consistently well since the latter part of September or October. We want to increase his opportunities. He’s playing on third down now"- See you later Mewelde Moore. Mendenhall has your role as well as his own. "Rashard has done a nice job from a blitz pick-up standpoint. He’s of course an established runner. Mewelde has not been consistent from a blitz pick-up standpoint so it’s created an opportunity for Rashard to expand his role. " And there is confirmation of that.
"Q: How many touchdowns has Ike Taylor given up in man-to-man coverage? And is there a chance he’ll be released after the season?
A: To answer your last question first, we haven’t pondered any off-season decisions on any level at this point. I don’t think it’s the appropriate time to take that approach to anything that we’re doing. Our goal as an organization, as a football team, is to be singularly focused on Green Bay and what it takes for us to win this game. In regards to your first question, I don’t have an answer to that. I don’t know how many specific touchdowns Ike has given up this year. "- Watch out Ike, coach didn't give you much support there...
