In a less drastic move, it maybe time for Dick to bench William Gay and let Burnett play. BA will never get fired as long as Ben is here. He gives Ben too much freedom and no QB wants to lose that.

This team is less than one year removed from a Super Bowl victory. Sure, it could use an upgrade at one or two positions, but this is basically the SAME TEAM. IMO, much of the decline can be boiled down to poor coaching performance. I realize the head coach won't be fired, and likely none of his assistants will be, either. I just wish there was some way to hold them accountable. Maybe, sooner or later, they'll be hit with the realization of how they pi$$ed away a tremendous opportunity.

That's pathetic. Then why have a head coach? Players play and coaches coach. If the head guy (Tomlin) sees this offense is downright offensive he needs to make a switch. Otherwise they both are out of a job and Ben gets a new offensive coordinator anyway .

I've said all along that, at some point, the Steelers were going to have to become "Coach Tomlin's team".

Right now, he has very little influence over the coaches or those in the FO...he inherited most of these people from the Cowher regime.

As I see it, these are the likely casualties from the present coaching staff:

Coordinators

Bruce Arians: This is so obviously a no-brainer it isn't even funny. One thing that is very important to remember here is that Ben may be at the peak of where he will be as a QB. He's had two head injuries in his career and, very arguably, he hasn't really shown the over-the-top improvement with this OC as he was poised to show us when he was under the tutelage of Whiz. Ben can still be THAT quarterback. But he is running out of time. Clearly, BA hasn't done Ben any favors in the way he has structured the offense.

D!ck LeBeau: As Ovie put it in another thread, it's possible that he has stayed past the "sell by date". The scheme, at this point in the season, isn't working. The fact that this team is so seemingly out of sync with the absence of one player is disconcerting. But, the Steelers might well have lost half of the games they've already lost anyway simply because they haven't been making the necessary plays to turn the tide of games. It really isn't fair to point at the DC and blame him for that. But the scheme might have at least as much to do with the struggle as the play. If this team is ever to see a real "Tomlin era" it should allow LeBeau to bow out gracefully and allow Tomlin to investigate the 4-3 as an option if he's so inclined.

Position Coaches

Ken Anderson, Quarterbacks Coach: At the end of this season, Ben will have three years remaining on his deal. He's going to be here, folks. And his OC has retarded his development to the point where he has had a seriously substandard season at the height of his career, even though he won a SB during that season. He has rebounded to put up numbers this season that could be the best in his career. But 6-6 is the number all will remember. Aside from BA, however, the QB coach needs to work his players on the proper details of their position. If Ben isn't listening to his coaches for any reason, then he'd better be putting up numbers that prove that he doesn't need the advice. Those numbers aren't there, no matter how we spin them and no matter how they look on paper. 6-6 are numbers that don't lie. The Coffee Achiever is either not forceful enough to handle his #1 player or the advice he is giving him isn't working. Either way, Coach Tomlin is likely to do better by replacing him.

Ray Horton, Defensive Backs Coach: His position has added 4 players in the draft in the last 3 years. Are these guys simply inept and can't play? Or, is the scheme not permitting these players to be all they can be? I've said it before that DBs are one of three areas on any team where talent rises above all other factors. These guys can either play or are unable to play...simple as that. The rest is positional fine tuning. Is it an accident that the cornerbacks for the Steelers have failed to register a single interception in the first 12 games? No wonder we are 6-6. Ray Horton has had the largest single position failure on this team as a unit and not even a completely healthy Troy Polamalu might have been able to bail him out.

Bob Ligashesky, Special Teams Coach and Amos Jones, Asst. Special Teams Coach: This is another no-brainer. And, this is a unit that should, ideally, be handled by coaches who are much younger and have a great fire in the belly than these two. Their failures have been well noted here, as if they aren't obvious to anyone who has been watching casually.

I would imagine that the Steelers have an opportunity to give Coach Tomlin enough rope to hang himself with in the off-season. OTOH, he may be able to show the Steeler Nation how well he trims the sail that sets us back on a heading to someplace worth going.

The Steelers are not yet Coach Tomlin's team. That needs to change in the off-season.

Arians was already on the coaching staff as the WR coach.


While many are highly critical of Arians & his playcalling (yes, there are head scratching moments), there has been an improvement in the passing game & an improvement in the running game this season.

What's the common aspect that has helped both running & passing improve?

Improved OL play.

Maybe, just maybe, Arians has been handcuffed by the poor play of the OL, not Ben being handcuffed by Arians?

If the Steelers organization wants to keep winning the way they have for the last 37 years...YES, they do.

The NFL is very much different today than it even was 10 years ago. If the new CBA trashes the salary cap, coaching and talent evaluation take on a whole new meaning. If any of the coaches I mentioned are beyond reproach enough to just give them a pass, then this is the place to air that out.

We've had a lot of discussions here about the "Steeler Way". The Steeler Way is generally accepted as being very insular and does not just casually throw people under the bus after a single bad performance.

But, this is the second season long flame out after a Super Bowl win in four years...THAT IS DEFINITELY NOT THE "STEELER WAY"!

The Steeler Way wins football games, period. It finds a way TO WIN at all points of the game. The 60 minutes they are "on the clock" are all the moment of truth. No one knows when a game can pivot on a blown opportunity at any point in the game.

The Steeler Way is about winning and doing the necessary things to adjust to the changing face of the NFL. If it takes launching six assistant coaches to keep up with the rest of the league, then so be it.
