Re: The Who at The Super Bowl

I saw the WHo about 2 years ago. Daltry's voice is going.

He could still belt out screams, but had trouble with soft songs like the start of Behind Blue Eyes. It really cracked.

I think they may be OK if they don't sing for a week ahead and also do 2-4 songs.

I, too, am surprised that they keep going older and older.

Well, they did show up for a Chili-Con-Carnival to support Scott Tenorman and his cancer of the @$$. I wonder if they had any of the Mr. & Mrs. Tenorman chili while they were in Colorado?

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Flippy - I'm 42. For folks my age and up (which is the majority of the population) every band you listed would be a whiff...with the exception of Mayer. I'm not really a fan of his but he's a very good guitar player so I'll give him that.

If we're gonna throw guitar players out there I'd personally make it Joe Bonamassa. This guy has killer riffs and a powerful voice. Unfortunately, this is about as "pop" as he gets.

Monte Montgomery is an incredibly talented guy who won best acoustic guitar player 7 years in a row at Texas' prestigious SXSW festival. This guy has some serious chops, is a hell of a nice guy (I've met him), is very talented and would put on a great show. Here he is tearing up his acoustic guitar on Austin City Limits.

For a band that would appeal to multiple generations I'd offer up Blues Traveler. Those guys are some very talented individuals, they put on one hell of a show, have a variety of songs and even had some recognizable hits. And they play all their own instruments. Some of them even play more than one.

They're a bit too far off the mainstream though so would probably never even be considered.

Seeing this tune live at the Super Bowl would be awesome to me:

            Do I detect sarcasm?

Anyway, I'm as big a classic rock fan as any, but would it be too much to ask we get a band from THIS decade?

And don't tell me there are none, there are plenty of good and popular bands these days with family-friendly acts. The League just isn't trying. Either that, or they're trying to appeal too much to the old geezers who attend these things.

Ding ding ding! Businessmen that can afford prime Super Bowl tickets aren't going to want to sit through T.I. and Li'l Wayne.

I actually like older music, but think that SuperBowl XLIV should have a halftime band that represents it's current generation.

This discussion is why we end up with bands like Green Day and Nickleback. Older people want a sound that's closer to the olden days and these bands try to please everyone and become so darn cheesy.

I think to make everyone happy we might need to go southern rock which almost borders on country. Like these guys.

But really they oughta go straight pop and there's a current pop star that's more talented and a better performer than any pop star that's come before:

When's the last time anyone played pinball? That's around the time the WHo should have retired. They've passed a generation gap imho.

I played pinball last night at a pizza joint here with my 10 year old son. He also listens to classic rock, classic country and even some old school hiphop with me. Yet he also enjoys new top 40 music. It's funny that most of the people on here are complaining about the Who playing the Super Bowl, are the same ones saying how cool Renegade is a the Steeler Anthem.....seems strange.

One thing that can be said for the Who, everyone will recognize the music, young and old alike, because they sold out and their music has been used in movies, TV themes commercials...which is better than playing some music that only a portion of hip 18-27 year olds would know. And I don't care what type of great musician singer John Mayer is, he was a nerd in high school and I refuse to listen to his crap.

Yeah, during the halftime show, the uninitiated will hear "Who Are You" and think "Hey...that's the CSI theme!" Then they'll play "Won't Get Fooled Again" and they'll think "Whoa...it's that other CSI song!" They'll finish their set with "Baba O'Riley" and they will think " Do these guys play anything other than CSI music???"

Maybe they can have some kind of murder mystery themed half time show where
David Caruso, Lieutenant Dan, and Morpheus team up to solve the caper before
Pete Townsend destroys the evidence on his hard drive.

Coffee, literally, just sprayed out onto Chadman's keyboard.

                            You bastard.

The people that are trying to make the world worse never take a day off, why should I?

                            Light up the darkness.

RB and Jiga - Good stuff!

Flippy - If someone like 3 Doors Down or Lady Gaga is playing the SB halftime show I'm finding something else to do...like cleaning out the litter box.

Here's the deal...it's a tough job to find artists that have name recognition for mass appeal and that are safe from a no stupid stunts standpoint. And they also must for sure appeal to an older audience.

Right now classic rock and (puke) country have the most mass appeal and name recognition...along with being the safest choices.

I'll take the classic rock over (puke) country any day of the week and twice on Super Bowl Sunday!

I'd love to see The Who do this one, but I really doubt they will.

Oh yeah...and I still play pinball.

Ok, so the halftime act gets roughly 25 minutes...maybe a tad bit less. So here's my ultimate play list for The Who for the SB halftime show. I know they'd never do this play list...heck, they probably won't play any of these songs because it will be all about the big hits...but this would be my list if I were in charge of putting it together. In this order.

As for what they'll actually do, I predict: Substitute, Baba O'Reily, My Generation, Pinball Wizard and Won't Get Fooled Again. Not necessarily in that order.
