    Defense

The Colts are leading the league in points-against with 108. We have given up 139 points. However, I checked the Colts' games. They have given up no direct points on TOs or on STs. We have given up 35 points on TOs and STs (Pick-6 to each of CIN, DET; Fumble return to DEN; STs to each of CLE and MIN). That means that our D is actually out-performing the Colts just slightly. I didn't realize it until I actually checked it. I didn't check some of the other top teams in points-against. But I'm guessing we're probably in top-3 in Defensive Points Against.

Here's something else to consider - opponents.

    Colts to date 09 -
    1 Sep 13 JAC 12 @ IND 14 - Jax currently 4-4, 21st in scoring in league
    2 Sep 21 IND 27 @ MIA 23 - Mia currently 3-5, 14th in scoring
    3 Sep 27 IND 31 @ ARI 10 - AZ currently 5-3 12th in scoring
    4 Oct 04 SEA 17 @ IND 34 - SEA currently 3-5, 20th in scoring
    5 Oct 11 IND 31 @ TEN 9 - TEN currently 2-6, 24th in scoring
6 Bye (A narrow win yet again, for the Dolts!)
7 Oct 25 IND 42 @ STL 6 - STL currently 1-7, dead last in scoring in NFL
    8 Nov 01 SF 14 @ IND 18 - SF currently 3-5, 19th in scoring
    9 Nov 08 HOU 17 @ IND 20 Final - HOU currently 5-4, 15th in scoring.

*They have played 3 teams at 500 or better all season. Combined record of opponents so far and % of winning averages: 26-35 , 42.6%.
Average scoring rank of opponents so far - 19.625

    Remaining opponents -
    10 Nov 15 NE @ IND - NE 6-2, 3rd in scoring
    11 Nov 22 IND @ BAL - BAL 4-4, 9th in scoring
    12 Nov 29 IND @ HOU - HOU 5-4, 15th in scoring
    13 Dec 06 TEN @ IND - TEN 2-6, 24th in scoring
    14 Dec 13 DEN @ IND - DEN 6-2, 22nd in scoring
    15 Dec 17 IND @ JAC - Jax 4-4, 21st in scoring
    16 Dec 27 NYJ @ IND - NYJ 4-4, 18th in scoring
    17 Jan 03 IND @ BUF - BUF 3-5, 28th in scoring.

    * Six remaining opponents are 500 or better. Combined record of remaining opponents is 34-31, or 52.3% winning record. Average scoring rank of remaining opponents - 17.5th

This is a tougher schedule for them in the home stretch.

    Steelers to date 09 -
    1 Sep 10 TEN 10 @ PIT 13 - TEN currently 2-6, 24th in scoring
    2 Sep 20 PIT 14 @ CHI 17 - CHI currently 4-4, 16th in scoring
    3 Sep 27 PIT 20 @ CIN 23 - CIN currently 6-2, 17th in scoring
    4 Oct 04 SD 28 @ PIT 38 - SD currently 5-3, 10th in scoring
    5 Oct 11 PIT 28 @ DET 20 - DET currently 1-7, 26th in scoring
    6 Oct 18 CLE 14 @ PIT 27 - CLE currently 1-7, 30th in scoring
    7 Oct 25 MIN 17 @ PIT 27 - MIN currenlty 7-1, 2nd in scoring
    8 Bye
    9 Nov 09 PIT 28 @ DEN 10 - DEN currently 6-2, 22nd in scoring.

*We have played 5 teams at 500 or better all season. Combined record of opponents so far and % of winning averages: 32-30 , 51.6%.
Average scoring rank of opponents so far - 20.833th

    Remaining opponents:
    10 Nov 15 CIN @ PIT - CIN 6-2, 17th in scoring
    11 Nov 22 PIT @ KC - KC 1-7, 27th in scoring
    12 Nov 29 PIT @ BAL - BAL 4-4, 9th in scoring
    13 Dec 06 OAK @ PIT - OAK 2-6, 31st in scoring
    14 Dec 10 PIT @ CLE - CLE 1-7, 30th in scoring
    15 Dec 20 GB @ PIT - GB 4-4, 7th in scoring
    16 Dec 27 BAL @ PIT - BAL 4-4, 9th in scoring
    17 Jan 03 PIT @ MIA - Mia 3-5, 14th in scoring

    * Four remaining opponents are 500 or better. Combined record of remaining opponents is 25-39, or 39% winning record. Average scoring rank of remaining opponents - 18th

It doesn't look like much of a difference between their schedule and ours, but it can be. Their record was softer than ours so far, and ours is softer going on from here.

It might just make a difference. Added to this, we lost by two field goals. They beat JAX and SF by only two points, and HOU by only 3.

We are clearly on the same level as they are IMO.

It's always irked me that non-offensive TDs count towards defensive points allowed.

Bottom line, Peyton has trouble with a 3-4 and will get slaughtered by NE or PIT in the playoffs.

Yeah, but they broaden the perspective and give a baseline for a forecast. Good analysis. Considering the SoS should definitely go in when comparing two teams/Ds/Os/etc.

I've been critical of our D (disguised as "concerned") for their 4thQ play (which I actually was, partially). I was convinced though that it was correctible. I ... think ... most of that 4thQ correction will take care of itself with Troy in the lineup.
