Some of the best play at OLBer EVER

When you consider total tackles, and forced fumbles in addition to sacks, JH is playing outside LB as well as it has EVER been played.

People just look at sacks alone. This is how clowns make the ridiculous contention that Ware had a better season last year, or that guys like Porter were even close.

He will not end up in the hall, wont have the career stats of many Steelers.

But when you want to find an outside LB who averages double digit sacks and triple digit tackles over several season the list is very short.

Over 15 sacks and triple digit tackles in consecutive seasons?
That list ends at ONE that I can think of: Lawrence Taylor.

8 sacks and 41 tackles puts JH on that pace for a second season.

Consider the fact that Harrisons pick and runback was the best defensive play in a SB EVER, one that he freelanced to put himself in a position to make- That is Jack Ham smart.

    Yesterday? 2 sacks

Also, while in pursuit, running down Peterson yesterday at the LOS from behind- Greg Lloyd at his best.

JH is playing OLB as well as anybody ever has

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

I thought that was his most impressive play of the day.

At first I thought it was Timmons, thinking know way JH chased Peterson down from backside of the play.

he played really well yesterday, that first series of the game when he chased down peterson was a thing of beauty, peterson may of been gone if he did not get him....i think of hall of famers that the steelers will have from this group and i think, ben, hines and probably troy, but harrison is not one, he has not been around long enough, but if he keeps up for another 3 years than he would have 6 great seasons in a row with 2 good season before, he is a long shot but if he can have the 6 great seasons than you never know, probably still too short, i think that 8 great seasons gets you a better shot...

Harrison played very well against the Vikes.

But how about Farrior? I've been on his case all season long, but I thought he turned in a
          monster performance vs. the Vikings.

I agree that JH is playing at that level. I wasn't aware of the sack/tackle combo record though. Looks like he's on pace for 109/21!!!! Wow! Now, to be a bit fair, his 2nd sack yesterday came in garbage time, but a sack nonetheless.

Let me add, please look at what all the other sack monster OLBers do in the way on total tackles at any time in their careers. Ware, Porter, Merriman, ect

Nobody since LT consistently puts up triple digit tackles and a 15 plus sacks. They just see the sacks. Nobody even thinks about how hard it is to do both.

I think Ware's pretty solid. He had 84 tackles the last 2 seasons.

But then there are guys like Dumervil who's best season had 39 tackles. Dumervil isn't in the same class of player as Harrison/Ware.

Joey Porter is a little different player who's had a 66 tackles in a season. But he's also way better than Harrison/Ware in coverage.

The one point I'd make about Woodley is look at his playoff production. He averages 2 sacks and 5 tackles a game. Extrapolate that out and that's a 80 tackle / 32 sack season, not bad.

Harrison averages 4 tackles and .3 sacks which extrapolated would be 64 tackles and 5 sacks.

Harrison had one great play in the SuperBowl, but his playoff production isn't the best.

Sorry flips but I totally disagree with this one. I think he's as good or better than j-peezy in coverage

Tackles, sacks, forced fumbles, SB TD...all are great indicators of play on the field. And James Harrison is the current NFL master of splash plays. But a lack of these numbers for a few games doesnt diminish the effect of James Harrison's presence on the field. He leads his teammates in deed and maintains the crown of #1 intimidator. Trust me, James Harrison is a leader.

No argument, Ware is solid, heck he is a force.....but
84 tackles is almost TWENTY less than Harrison.....THAT is my point.
As good as Ware is, Harrison is EASILY better.
But then there are guys like Dumervil who's best season had 39 tackles. Dumervil isn't in the same class of player as Harrison/Ware.
                        OK

Yes Porter is a "different" player.
He is inferior. Period. And it aint close.

He was awesome. Which makes his play this season so puzzling.

Harrison averages 4 tackles and .3 sacks which extrapolated would be 64 tackles and 5 sacks.
Harrison had one great play in the SuperBowl, but his playoff production isn't the best.
Harrison got held more than anyone I have ever seen during that stretch, have you forgotten? Heck the team had to make a formal complaint. And he was doubled all the time.

Woodley NEVER has to go through so many people to get to the QB.

Although some here criticize JH for his outside rush (i.e. he runs himself out of the play), I have two comments on that.

                          1. If he spins inside, the OL tackle usually wraps his arm around his neck and holds him, this is also true if he rushes at the wrong angle to the outside.

                          2. When he rushes wide, a stunt from either another LB or a CB is wide open to the CB. LeBeau tried this with Gay once Sunday and Gay hesitated instead of running wide open to the CB. He had a clear shot on Favre and still hit him as he threw even though he hesitated. This situation should be exploited more in the future.

The Broncos just switched to a 3-4 this season, so Dumervil has only been an OLB for a grand total of 6 games. Before that, Elvis was a 4-3 DE, starting his career as a pass rushing specialist as opposed to a full-time d-lineman, so you would not expect high tackle numbers from an undersized DE who played mostly on passing downs.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.
