Essex hopes to seize opportunity

Steelers' Essex hopes to seize opportunity

By Scott Brown, TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Sunday, August 9, 2009
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsbu ... 37463.html

Darnell Stapleton is one of Trai Essex's closest friends on the Steelers. That doesn't mean Essex won't try to take advantage of the opportunity Stapleton's knee injury has provided for him at right guard.

Stapleton had knee surgery this past Thursday and is expected to be out for at least a couple of weeks. That will give Essex plenty of chances to show the coaches that the fifth-year veteran is ready to crack the starting lineup.

"If Darnell was healthy, he knew this would have been a competition," said Essex, who has been working with the first-team offense. "I came into camp knowing this was going to be a competition, and I was going to fight my hardest to get this position."

Essex's value to the Steelers in past years has been his versatility. His ability to play both guard and tackle has made him a key reserve in the event of a game-day injury.

But Essex re-signed with the Steelers in the offseason — he said he attracted interest from several other teams — because of his belief that he would get a chance to challenge Stapleton for the starting job at right guard.

Essex said he focused on adding strength, particularly to his upper body, during the offseason. When asked what he has to show the coaches during preseason practice, the 6-foot-4, 324-pounder said, "Consistency is the biggest thing. They know I know the playbook, and they know the mental part is good. Physically, I've just got to be more consistent."

Injury update

Running back Willie Parker woke up Saturday morning with back spasms and didn't take part in either practice yesterday. Coach Mike Tomlin said the Steelers held Parker out of drills as a precaution.

Also missing practice yesterday because of injuries were outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley (knee), running back Mewelde Moore (hamstring), wide receivers Martin Nance (hamstring) and Brandon Williams (abdomen) and defensive tackle Scott Paxson (calf).

Wide receiver Mike Wallace and cornerback Keenan Lewis didn't finish the afternoon practice as a precaution, Tomlin said. Wallace experienced some tightness in his groin, while Lewis had some tightness in his back.

Line 'em up

The Steelers will hold their first goal-line drill of training camp this afternoon. The drill is the most anticipated one of camp, and when asked if the Steelers would have it today, Tomlin smiled and said to reporters, "I would encourage you to come because you very well might see goal-line."

Fans who attend the 2:55 p.m. practice won't be the only ones who get to see the Steelers hit for the first time since training camp started. Today, the Steelers host the families of the players, coaches and staff.

Extra points

Tomlin held wide receiver Santonio Holmes out of practice yesterday morning to give him a rest. ... Rookie center A.Q. Shipley has been putting in some work as a long snapper at training camp as he did during offseason practices. "The more you can do the better," the former Moon High and Penn State standout said.

This is the first I have heard of Shipley long-snapping since that aspect of his game was discussed in all of our pre- and post-draft board ramblings. I think they will still keep Greg Warren as their primary longsnapper, but it is good to see others getting work so we don't have another incident like in the Giants game last year. Then again, for this to be useful, Ship would have to be active on gameday, which I don't expect him to be as a rookie. We'll see.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Here's your chance homey...prove yourself worthy of said interest.

I think our line will surprise people this year. Some continuity (without sounding like I'm conceding to some $hitty excuse by the coaching staff) could be helpful. I can't wait to see our line play...which is something I've never said before in my life...I'm not an O-line guy typically...

I've always said that if you want your kids to have a real shot at making it to the NFL, just teach them how to long snap (the correct way) and have them practice it until they are great at it. It obviously helps to be at least 6 feet in height and have a decent weight to handle that interior position.

The person who told me this a long time ago was Sean Landeta. One of the best punters I've ever met. He used to punt 60-65 yards easily just picking up a ball and kicking it.

If Shipley can handle the long snapping duties and do it well, he'll take the spot filling 2 positions. Great way to make the team....

I remember Kendall Gammon, who made a career out of long-snapping. Same with the guy (who played 20 years, signed with the Giants, and muffed the most important snap of his career.)

Point being, I agree. That may be Shipley's ticket.

i too am very eager to see the oline this season and i agree i think they will improve a lot from last season. i was very impressed with max starks last season, im sure he and kemo will both improve. hartwig is pretty solid and i thought stapleton was an upgrade over simmons (not like that is saying a lot) colon im not eager to watch but all in all its a young o-line (with the exception of hartwig) so hopefully the worst has past.

You'd think that a dude with notoriously short arms would not be a long-snap candidate. Wouldn't he just topple over into a somersault after snapping the ball to the punter?

No. If he can do it with great accuracy, the job should be his. Regardless of arm length. That really isn't an issue at this point. I know it was all the talk during the draft, but they took him for a reason.

As far as Sean goes, I think just about everyone who watches football will always remember him for that f#%kup. But he sure could boom the ball. I was right beside him on the football field when he just took a ball and kicked it. I was in awe. 50 yard line and it hit past the goal posts.

I know...it was a joke. Just a funny mental picture of a guy with short arms trying to launch the ball between his legs and tumbling over because of it.

I still think Warren is kept as a specialist with Shipley or Legursky (whichever one is active on gamedays) as the backup option so we don't need to use Harrison there again. Both of those two players have spoken of some longsnap ability in their past(Hartwig and Stapleton have not, to my knowledge...if they did, we would have used one of them over Jimmy Hate in the Giants game last year).

True what you say, just don't know about that 53 man roster and how they'll fill it. Don't know if they will have the luxury of adding Shipley on there as a backup C and LS, unless he really impresses the next few weeks. It would really be nice to see if Shipley could play G.

I'm looking forward to seeing the pre season opener. Should be fun.
