Vick close to signing with an NFL team.

Vick says he’s ‘getting close’ to a deal

By LARRY O'DELL, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 45 minutes ago

Michael Vick(notes) said Thursday that he is getting close to signing with a professional football team but refused to elaborate.

Vick made the comment to reporters as he left a courtroom after a hearing in his bankruptcy case. Asked about his progress in signing with a team, Vick said: “We’re getting close.” He declined to answer additional questions.

Wouldn't the UFL be considered a professional football team? I believe that's his best bet at this point in time. Take a one year contract, get back into NFL football shape and regain your skills.

I don't believe it will be an NFL team. Just my opinion though.

... Gotta love the way Mike Brown talks.... ...Is it just me, or does he sound like a buffoon with these comments?

Bengals not interested in Vick
Bengals notebook
By Joe Reedy
jreedy@enquirer.com

For now, count the Bengals out of the teams looking at Michael Vick.

Despite speculation last week that they might be among the clubs with an interest in the reinstated quarterback, Bengals owner Mike Brown doesn’t see a place for him, especially with Carson Palmer on the roster.

“When you have a situation like ours, he’s a very difficult fit,” Brown said. “Quarterbacks are like queen bees, you can only have one of them before they start stepping on each other. We have ours.”

The Bengals had been seen as a team willing to take a chance on Vick based on Brown’s reputation of giving second opportunities to players.

Vick was reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday. Once signed, Vick can participate in preseason practices, workouts and meetings as well as play in the final two preseason games. He will not be allowed to participate in regular-season games. Goodell will consider full reinstatement by Week 6 (Oct. 18-19).

Brown said he was happy with Goodell’s handling of the matter.

“I think he did exactly the right thing. I’m sort of proud how he went about it. He split the baby in a pretty impressive fashion,” Brown said.

“I would argue that Michael Vick made a bad error, but what a price he’s paid. He’s paid million of dollars. He’s lost his reputation, gone to prison. I don’t know what more you can do to a guy that’s already been done. I wish him well and hope a team would pick him up and give him a chance to play and give him a chance to redeem himself. It will be nice if it ends up a good story.”

Re: Vick close to signing with an NFL team.

I've been trying to think what city would work best for Vick and I have to say it's kind of a tough call.

St. Louis Rams - As a potential back-up to Bulger (who behind that line has sustained a number of injuries) The Rams may make some sense. St. Louis wouldn't be a big media city - and the team has been so bad of late he may actually help them get a little better.

San Francisco - To me San Fran is the perfect "Team" for him - Coach Singletary is the kind of heavy disciple that Vick could probably use right now - The 49ers could certainly use some love at the QB position - which going into camp right now is probably up for grabs. The big issue is the city of San Francisco might be a problem for a guy like Vick. Californians could become completely focused on the crime and not on his ability.

New York Jets - Do you bring Vick in to help the transition of Sanchez? Kellen Clemens is the current back-up - and right now there's no reason to believe they couldn't keep both Clemens AND Vick on the team if they still want to develop Clemens. New York though is an insane Media city - hard to believe Vick would survive there.

New England Patriots - First and foremost they have Randy Moss, so if Brady were to get injured again - they have the one WR that even Michael Vick could succeed with. Other than that I truly believe that Belichick is the kind of Beliprick that would actually take Michael Vick on his team so that he could run some form of Wildcat Offense against the Dolphins JUST because they embarrassed him the season before. New England is also a very tough Media city - however they would probably give Vick a little bit of a pass just because Belichick has transformed so many players from the past - Meaning he made Tom Brady, Matt Cassell, Vrabel into stars, and resurrected Randy Moss. Vick would be once again on a winning franchise and people might give him a pass just because Belichick is taking a flyer out on him.

Denver Broncos - to me the Broncos make a lot of sense as well. However their front office / coaching staff has screwed up so terribly in the past few months it's difficult to guage whether they would gamble even more on Michael Vick. However currently their starting QB is Kyle Orton or Chris Simms - giving Michael Vick a shot makes sense. Denver seems like the kind of city that wouldn't stir up too much media trouble for Vick.

Finally -

Jacksonville - It's in the south which might help, and Jacksonville asks Garrard to play a QB style that Vick could probably do well in. I think many of us look at Jacksonville as being similiar to the Steelers of the 90's and early 2000's with Garrard playing the Kordell Stewart, run when you have too - and only make passes that won't beat us style of play. They've got a very solid running game, and a fearsome defense - and Jacksonville is a small enough city also not to attract a lot of attention to Michael Vick. Seems like this would be a good home for him.

Re: Vick close to signing with an NFL team.

I think a good fit could be Carolina. It is between his home state of Virginia and his first NFL home in Georgia. They were a 12-4 team who lost in the playoffs because their QB had one of the all-time worst playoff performances by a single player with 5 interceptions in their loss to Arizona. And after that performance, they gave Delhomme a contract extension and did not bring in any competition for him.

They have a tremendous run-blocking line and two excellent RB's in DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. Could you imagine Vick under center with those two guys in the backfield behind that line? There would be all kinds of wildcat options. They could run the ball two-thirds of the time, and whenever they throw the ball, just throw it to Steve Smith, because they don't have very many other options through the air.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

If a team has a QB throw 5 INT's in a home playoff game..doesn't get benched... and gets a contract extension...

I highly doubt they would sign Vick..

that being said.. it could happen since they are so stupid when it comes to the QB position

new england is my bet. a one year deal to hone his pathetic qb skills a little, but mostly used as a slash type player. a great, low cost signing that would really make it a 2 team race for the lombardi.

I gotta agree with you, Pap. I can't see an NFL team willing to put up with all the animal rights protesters and bad publicity. Though I have to say that I wouldn't be shocked if NE took him. They have no morals and their fans don't seem to care that their owner, coach and most of their players are scumbags.

I agree with Pappy and others who think Vick will sign with the UFL. The thread title says NFL team, but nowhere in the story does it say NFL. It's a win-win for both parties involved. Vick gets to showcase his QBing talent against subpar competition, and the UFL gives viewers a reason to watch by signing a former star like Vick. It's like Christmas in July for an upstart league having Vick available.

At first I didn't think that the NFL would want Michael Vick back and I felt pretty confident they would make him jump through so many hoops it would basically be built for him to fail. Hence the NFL could wash their hands of it and basically say they tried but Michael Vick just didn't cooperate.

However losing him to the UFL is (IMO) a minor concern to the NFL. If Michael Vick played in the UFL - I might check it out to see how he's playing. And the UFL has nothing to lose in comparision (as long as M. Vick stays clean).

So in general the UFL gets some attention and some viewers and despite the fact that the UFL is a longshot to compete against the NFL - the NFL probably won't like the attention he'll get there. So as luck would have it I think the NFL will help Michael Vick land with a team, and they'll take a little heat for it.

Michael Vick is always going to get the dog killer label, but I think if he starts out as a back-up somewhere the public outcry will be stifled by the NFL P.R. machine which will remind us all.....like a skipping record....

He served his time......he's been a model citizen since......he's very sorry for what he's done....he just wants to get on with a "normal" life.....he served his time....etc.

Seriously I can already hear one of the Broadcasters "wording" it that - it's such a shame Michael Vick went to prision at the height of his career - he has so much talent. Basically framing it that you kind forget he's the reason he went to prison in the first place.

What are you gonna do?
