PITTSBURGH - When Bill Cowher stepped down as head coach of the Steelers, there were worries that the franchise would be on a downward spiral if they didn't select someone from within the organization to take over the helm.AP file photo/ Mike Tomlin

Both Ken Whisenhut and Russ Grimm appeared to be front-runners. But Whisenhut left to take the Cardinals job and Grimm, despite published reports, was not offered the job.

Instead it went to a relatively unknown, named Mike Tomlin who is now one of Pittsburgh's favorite sons.

Tomlin recently sat down with NFL Networks Alex Flanagan, and what he had to say might come as a surprise, but it shows his passion for the game and why the team respects him and have performed at the level of excellence they have.

Flanagan asked Tomlin if in his wildest dreams he ever expected to win a Super Bowl in his first two years as a head coach, and his reply was yes.

"I was kind of disappointed that it didn't happen in year one, truth be known," Tomlin said. "I'm wired like anyone else in my lockeroom is wired and that is to win."

Unlike many head coaches today who have NFL playing experience, Tomlin had to work his way to the league. A Sociology major at William and Mary College, his mother wanted him to go to law school, but he had other ideas.

"My mom went through a time there where she was not optimistic about what it is that I do," Tomlin said. "More than anything I wanted her to know that had a vision and a plan and threw it out to her I would be an NFL head coach by the age of 35."

In January of 2007, he was named the Steelers head coach at the age of 34. Following in the legacy of two great coaches like Cowher and Chuck Noll was no easy task, but it was one he relished.

"I like pressure, one of the things I like about the job is the legacy, the standards that are held to," Tomlin told Flanagan. "Those are the standards of Western Pa, and I subscribe to that."

Now he is just three rings behind Noll.

Only in America could a janitor aspire to be so much. In reality though, whenever I see that obsessive/compulsive gleam in Tomlin's eyes I realize that for him, coaching is a 25- hour a day job.

Any man that is brave enough to headlock Deebo can lead me into battle.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

        Too funny.

That would make a good caption this:
