    June 12, 2006...a day I will...

    ....remember forever! A life-changing moment!

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was driving my
company truck in the hills of Pleasanton, CA on that
    faithful Monday morning.

I had just turned on the radio to hear Jim Rome say...
"We have Superbowl Champion QB Ben Roethlisberger
on at the bottom of the first hour". Rome mentioned a
few other things scheduled for the show and took a
    commercial.

He comes back, and the first thing he says is..."Well we
thought we were gonna have Ben on the show, but
unfortunately Ben has been in a serious motorcycle
accident, and it appears that he wasn't wearing a helmet.

I don't know what all of you were doing at the time, but
    I almost took-out a couple of mail-boxes before I was able
    to stop.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I THOUGHT HE WAS
DEAD!!! No, I really mean that, I thought it was over!

Rome updated the situation atleast a dozen more times
on the show, and when he said that he was conscious,
I was relieved, but in no way did I think he would play
the 2006 season, I just wanted him to be ok.

That day, Ben had a ANGEL watching over him, and that
ANGEL saved his life, and it's nothing short of a miracle
that he did not die that day!!

When I heard that he was going to make his first public
appearance at the Celebrity Golf Tournament, in Lake Tahoe
just days before it was about to start, I knew I had to be
    there.

Most of you already know about..."The Fork of Greatness",
and to this day, the "Fork" holds a special place in my
heart, even though it's a little weird...if I may say so
    myself.

I was not brought up in a religious environment as a child, but
I have always believed in a "God-above". And every day that
"God" ALLOWS me to be a Steelers fanatic, is a miracle for me!!!

Actually, I think he is very entertained by my enthusiasm...well
it might just be my absolutely ridiculous obsession that he loves.

I'm not sure, but if I could be DADDY to my daughter, and
a Steelers fan for another 50 years, I think that should do
just fine! It'll also give me time to collect the "Spoon",
and "Knife" of Greatness as well. LOL!

    OH YEH....and one more thing...

Frooooooothing at the mouth like a crazed dog!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, hard to believe that was three years ago already. I was at work and saw the story pop up on CNN.com. Then spent the rest of the day looking for any information I could find on his condition. My first concern was hoping he'd pull through. I can honestly say I didn't think about the football side of it until the reports started saying he'd be ok. Have to agree with JD about the Angel watching over Ben. It could have been so much worse.

That was a scary day. The first thing I thought was "it can't be that bad." Then more
reports came in and I realized how serious it was and he could have died if it wasn't for
a medic doing some procedure to stop the blood flow, allowing Ben to breathe.

And then Steelers fans tailgating at the hospital... crazy stuff.

I got the news at work, well the rest of the day, nothing was completed.

JD, the US Open Challenge Ben is in today is 5 min from my house. I was going to go and to try and get a spoon or knife of greatness, but unfortunately, it is closed to the public.

Man, three years flew by. My wife, nephew, niece, and I were driving to Pittsburgh that day. We had the radio on, and they interrupted the song and came on and said there was a motorcycle accident downtown, and the driver of the motorcycle is Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger. Needless to say, we all freaked out. Like JD said, Big Ben had something and/or someone watching out for him that day.

I work at a newspaper, so I saw the inital AP feed move over, a one sentence graph which said something to the effect . . .

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been injured in a motorcycle accident while driving in Pittsburgh. It appears he was not wearing a helmet.

            <<updates to come>>

            Surreal feeling.

Why even have the tournament if it is closed to the public?

I've never heard of that. How stupid is that?

I was at work in the boiler room atmosphere that was my former employer. A guy got a text on his phone from ESPN or summat and told me about it.

                I was in shock.

I was on my way somewhere, can't remember where now, but the phones of the fan club went crazy. I pulled over and found a place with a TV on. BUT, since this is So Cal, sports news is confined to fishing and Tour de France, so I had to rely on texts and phone calls for a while.

Thank God for that angel of a medical tech who stopped the bleeding. He should get a ring from XLIII.

                    I remember every June 12th.

                    It's my birthday.

                    And parents anniversary.

But, '06 will stick out especially so.

I bet I know what you wished for when you blew out your birthday candles three years ago.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.
