    Kreider invited to Rams' camp.

Rams Invite Kreider To Training Camp

Dan Kreider's NFL career may be hanging by a thread, but it's not over yet.

Kreider, a Manheim Central graduate who's been with the Pittsburgh Steelers since 2000, has been invited to attend the St. Louis Rams training camp next month.

Kreider is an unrestricted free agent. He's been the Steelers' starting fullback for most of the last five seasons, but tore an anterior cruciate knee ligament after appearing in 10 games last season.

The Steelers announced in January that Kreider was unlikely to return.

Mike Williams, Kreider's high school coach, said last week that the knee is fully rehabilitated.

The Rams begin training camp for rookies and veterans July 25 in Mequon, Wis. Their first preseason game is Aug. 9 at Tennessee.

The Rams went 3-13 last season, the worst record in the NFC. Third-year head coach Scott Linehan survived, but the offensive coordinator, offensive line coach and three other assistants did not.

There are two fullbacks on the Rams' roster: Brian Leonard, a second-year player from Rutgers who's first on the depth chart, and fifth-year veteran Richard Owens, who also has experience as a long snapper.

Kreider is 5-foot-11, 250 pounds, and 31 years old. Known as a blocking specialist, Kreider had only two carries last season for two yards, and caught one pass for 15 yards.

Calls to his cell phone last week were not returned.

I really hope he makes that squad. Class act.

Yes he is... And so are his parents. (my dad and I sat next to them at the game in Indy...)

... Let's just hope that whoever replaces him develops the same blocking skills that he had. Davis isn't even close, and I don't know who is at that position.

If he's healthy, why won't he be in B&G???

Sad to see him go. For some odd reason Tomlin seemed to have it out for him. He was a better blocker than Davis and FWP said outright he was a better running back with Dk in front of him.

I was wondering about that last season. After the 2006 season I didn't hear a negative thing about the guy, then in 2007 before the season even started I remember reading about Kreider being in a position battle.

I have to admit, I'll enjoy seeing Kreider play for another team...

I still say going with Davis over Kreider was a mistake.

Kreider is a proven FB that can make holes. Even FWP himself said he wanted Kreider in front of him.

Maybe Davis and Tomlin are best buds or something? Hell if I know the reason behind the decision.

I don't believe it was Tomlin...I believe it was Arians' offense. There weren't too many sets with a FB that I recall.

Willie seemed to struggle with davis in front of him. he's not a very good blocker.
when danny was in there, folks were worried! he seemed to always make the right read and would seal the hole for parker.

Krieder played awfully hard for the Black and Gold, it's sad to see him go.

yup it was arians's offense. not only are there not many sets with a fb but i remember the coaching staff wanted a fb that was more athletic and able to catch passes. god knows why, does it really matter if your fb is fast and can catch passes. blocking is most important and krieder was the best at that. i even remember last season fwp saying how much he missed krieder. for some reason i really dont want to see krieder with any other team, but i guess i should be happy for the guy if he is with the rams

I'll miss Kreider as well. He was the battering ram for the Steeler's run game for a long time. I'll never forget when he literally ran over Ray Lewis on the goal line to open up a hole for the RB. (I think it was either the Bus or Amos Zeroueu)

Unfortunately for Kreider, Davis is a better pass catcher, and generally more athletic. Not to mention Davis contributes considerably on Special Teams. He is simply a better fit in Arian's offensive scheme. The traditional fullback position is now going the way of the dodo, being replaced by more flexible H-Back and twin TE sets.
